Bertram’s Obituary
Passed away at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander on January 14, 2020, Bertram
Norman Duke Chaulk of Ladle Cove and White Point, age 88 years.
Predeceased by his parents, Harold and Dorothy Chaulk and brother-in-law Beaton Tulk. Missed
and mourned by his loving wife of over 60 years, Shirley Chaulk, his five
children–Duke (Mary), Janice (Brian), Vincent (Tina), Rick (Louise), Kemberley
(Kelly), sister Leah Tulk, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and
a large circle of family and friends.
As he wished, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Cremation has taken
place. As an expression of sympathy, donations in his memory may be made to St. Stephen’s
United Church, Ladle Cove.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at James Paton Memorial
Hospital and special nephew Bert Tulk and his wife, Pauline.
Bert was a man who loved to be busy whether it was helping a neighbour, working on
his stage or wharf, or in the woods getting load after load of wood. He built a
cabin at White Point and then built a complete road, through beaches and
marshland, with load after load of sand, rocks, sticks, logs or whatever was
needed to provide an easy way for family and friends to make it to his cabin, or
their own cabins. He loved nothing more than when people visited and he could
offer a drink of his awesome home brew which in later years he rarely drank
himself but continued to make and share. For Bert it was about the sharing.
Sharing his time, his knowledge, his attention and for the lucky ones, sharing
his love.
He survived an accidental shooting that was only a centimeter away from killing
him, as well as two bouts of cancer. We thought he was invincible but an end
comes for everyone. We hold the memories of him tight and look forward to more
stories, this time about Bert and not from him. Feel free to share some in the
guestbook page here.
We don’t know what the road to heaven is made of but, no doubt, Bert stopped along
the way, noting where he might have to fix up a patch here or patch there.
He’ll want to make sure the way is the best he can make it for those coming
behind him.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Bertram Chaulk May 19 1931 January 14 2020..
