Retired Sergeant of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, passed peacefully away at Pleasant View Towers, following a lengthy battle with Cancer, on Friday, September 18, 2020, Alphonsus Bernard “Ben” Hawco, of St. John’s, formerly of Mt. Carmel, St. Mary’s Bay, aged 77 years. Predeceased by his parents Phonse & Annie (nee Fowler) Hawco, brothers Harold (2016) (Patsy) and Leonard (2013), niece Sandra Oke (2011) and good friend Rick Harris (2017). Left with great memories to celebrate his life are his daughters Caron (John Hutton), Tracey (Shawn Rowe), Dana (Bruce Chafe) and their mother Ella Hawco (nee Sutton); grandchildren Daniel and Abby; brothers: Adrian (Beth), Cliff (Dorothy) and Albert (Carolann); sisters: Jean Gibbons (d. Donald), Callista Didham (Hughie) and Carmella Singleton (Brian); sister-in-law Shirley; special friend Vera McGrath and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and a multitude of amazing friends that he met along his life’s journey. Ben loved his family and friends and those who knew him will remember him for his big heart, a beaming smile, his roaring laugh and a love of dancing or a “good scuff”. He was above all, a fiercely proud Newfoundlander who loved Newfoundland’s traditions, music and a good political debate. Ben proudly spent much of his professional life as a police officer with the RNC and when not working, he could be found at his cabin overlooking Whalen’s Pond at Brigus Junction. The Hawco family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Pleasant View Towers, for their care and support in making Ben’s final days comfortable. Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, on Monday from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. Funeral Service to take place on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at 10 a.m. from Caul’s Chapel.
