Obituary of Barbara Kloster
Mom was born on August 15th, 1931 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Macklin, Sask. to parents, Wendelin and Eugenia Stang. Being the eldest of 12 siblings, mom took on an early role of motherhood that continued her entire life. She grew up on the family farm east of Macklin and took her schooling at Hampton School. After she passed grade eight, mom had to quit school as grandma was ill and needed help at home, continuing on as a mother’s helper for many others.
In 1953 she took on a steady job at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a nurse’s aid and the same year met the love of her life, Steve Kloster. They were married, July 6th, 1955 and bought their first farm in 1957 just south of St. Donatus Church. In 1959 they bought a farm 7 miles south of Macklin where they lived for 27 years, raising a family of six. Mom prided herself in gardening, yard work, cooking, baking and sewing. She often said those were the most peace filled years in her life. In 1978, on a dare she made the decision to get her Grade 12 GED which she was so proud of. As the family got older, mom got more involved with the community and volunteer work. In 1980 Mom and Dad made their first Marriage Encounter. They spent the next 10 years in Marriage Encounter Leadership and another two years in Lay Formation, growing in love for each other and our God. In 1986, they decided to move into Macklin where they continued to be active in the church and community.
While mom enjoyed travelling, her heart was always at home where she could host family and friends. She always had a pot of soup brewing and most often it was her famous chicken noodle soup. The smell of fresh homemade bread and freshly baked cookies welcomed you as you entered her home. It didn’t matter what day of the week or for that matter what time of the day, there always seemed to be someone visiting or staying over for the night. She had a warm heart and a big listening ear and was genuinely interested in what you were up to.
In 2009, with great sadness, Dad fell ill and was called home. Now finding herself alone in the house, it was decided to build a duplex and move in next door to her sister, Kay. They became known as the two ladies and the revolving door at mom’s resumed. Mom knew so many people from near and far and loved nothing better to offer up a coffee and a meal or a bed to any and all that would stop in. In the fall of 2019, mom decided to move into the Villa Marie where she was able to continue visiting with her siblings, family and many friends. Mom had the ability to strike up a conversation with complete strangers and took an interest to get to know them. She loved life, her children, grandchildren, siblings, and friends. We will miss her strong faith, zest for life and ability to make everyone feel at home.
On October 7, 2020, surrounded by the love of her family, Barbara passed away peacefully at the Provost Health Centre at the age of 89 years.
