Obituary for Barbara Helen Clifford
Barbara Helen Clifford, born July 19, 1931, slipped the surly bonds of earth on December 21, 2020, and touched the face of God. Beloved partner of husband Paul for 63 years; Loving mother of Rebecca (Ron), Jonathan (Catherine), Christopher (Stephanie), and Margaret (John). Proud grandmother of Nicholas, Christopher, Daniel, Andrew, Thomas, Mateja, Colin and Ava; great-grandmother of Anastasia; second mother to Lynn and Sarah Jane. Predeceased by parents, Ellen and Leslie McKenna, and brothers, Noel & Brian.
Barbara led a full and interesting life. She was born and raised in Ottawa. Barbara was a prominent soprano soloist in the region, winning Kiwanis Festivals and other competitions, and featuring at area churches for many years. In 1957, while employed as the librarian at the National Film Board she met and married Paul, persuading him to sing tenor to her soprano. Music was a major factor throughout their lives. When Paul became a professor at McMaster University, they chose to raise their four children in Dundas. Barbara was active in politics, the community, the church, and sang with various choirs throughout the region. Paul and Barbara travelled extensively but always returned home to Dundas. Barbara was a firm supporter of Rotary, Salvation Army, HARRRP, to name a few, often supporting these causes through proceeds from her award winning knitwear. For over twenty years her sweaters won first place prizes at Ontario fairs, including the CNE.
The family thanks the team of PSWs who provided Barbara with exemplary care during these difficult months, and PCs Andy & Ryan for their patience and compassion. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life with plenty of music will be forthcoming once it is considered safe to do so. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your favourite charity.
Barbara passed peacefully in her sleep, and is on her way rejoicing, likely organizing church fundraisers, joining choirs, and arranging affordable housing in heaven.
When Barbara learned of her cancer diagnosis, she looked at Paul, smiled and said, “We’ve had good innings.” Never a truer word was spoken.
