Obituary
AUDREY JOHNSON (FLETCHER)
March 10, 1919 – April 24, 2020
Audrey Johnson passed away at Tudor House, Selkirk MB, in her 101st year, with her daughter Leona by her side. Audrey was predeceased by the “love of her life” Karl, her husband of 69 years, as well as her sisters Evelyn, Leona, Pauline & her brother Ross. Mom was born to Eleanor McIntyre of Sanford, MB and Arlie Arthur Fletcher of Emily, Minnesota.
Mom’s early years were spent living in Whitemouth & Brunkild, MB. As a result of the Depression and losing her mother at an early age, Mom went to work for a family in the Sanford area as a live-in housekeeper and babysitter. The children remained friends with Mom well into their 80’s. On weekends, Mom often stayed with her Aunt Nett and Uncle George on the McIntyre farm in Ferndale. Mom loved the farm so much, that this became their home in 1968 until Dad’s passing in 2011. The homestead was declared a Manitoba Heritage Farm.
Mom remained at the farm until the fall of 2012. At 92 years of age, she went to live with family in Lockport. In 2013 Mom moved to Woodland Courts in Selkirk and then in 2016, to Tudor House.
Mom was an amazing cook and baker. As kids we came home for lunch to freshly baked loaves of bread. We proceeded to cut off and eat all the end crusts and chose from a minimum of two cakes. Her pie crusts were melt in your mouth. Her venison ribs were known far and wide and her homemade buns were requested for every bake sale in the Sanford area…usually for the Legion Auxiliary.
Mom was an active member of the Sanford Ladies Auxiliary for over 25 years and was their secretary for 10 years. The Legion was a very important part of Mom’s life and she remained a member and attended the Wind-up Spring Brunch until her 99th year.
Mom had wonderful vegetable and flower gardens at the farm, but, her rhubarb, peonies, lilacs, Mock Orange and giant Oak tree were her pride and joy. Mom was a wonderful seamstress, making many of our clothes as youngsters as well as some of Dad’s shirts and at least one of his suits. Mom loved the bush along the LaSalle River and would go for long walks, coming back with an amazing bouquet of wild flowers and grasses to rival any florist’s arrangement.
Mom always enjoyed the horse races and in her later years liked nothing better than a trip to the casino and a glass of wine.
Audrey is survived by her 4 children: Marlene Balzar of Virden, MB, Russ Johnson (Ruth) Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Leona Drzystek (John) Lockport, MB, and Earl Johnson (Joanie) Rosser, MB. Audrey has 10 Grandchildren: Leona Stahl, Rick Dingley & Maureen Taylor Miller, Jeff Johnson & Candice Smith, Karli Drzystek (Earnshaw) & Wade Drzystek, Kale, Drew & Tanner Johnson, as well as numerous Great & Great Great Grandchildren.
Audrey’s family would like to thank the amazing staff and management at Tudor House for their indescribable love and caring throughout Audrey’s stay and especially during her final days. We thank you and love you. Stay Safe!!
Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will be held at an appropriate time.
MOM “Yours was the first laugh that answered my laugh. Yours were the first eyes that ever met mine, the first hug and a love that lasts forever.” ❤️
