Anthony (Tony) D’Amelio
Passed away peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on Thursday September 3, 2020 at the age of 95. Loving husband to Rose Marie (Fiorentino) for 71 years. Loving father of Tom (Sharon) and Rocco (Janet). Proud grandfather of Melissa (Sean), Derek (Jessica), Rachel, Andrew (Brenna), Colin and great grandfather to Nathaniel, Amelia and Isabelle. Survived by his sister Josephine DeFilippi (Quinto) and predeceased by his brother Donald and his wife Mary.
Tony was born in Foggia Italy on July 27, 1925. He was the son of Olindo and Rosario Verna. In 1932 when he was eight, his family immigrated to Toronto.
Tony was a proud veteran of WWII having joined the 48th Highlanders when he turned 18. He was honoured to have served in Holland. One of his fondest memories was having his wife join him and his fellow veterans in 1995 in Holland for the 50th anniversary of the end of the war and the liberation of Holland. As an avid gardener, tulips always had a special place.
Tony was a long time employee of National Knitting Mills and when he wasn’t working took the time to be involved in the community. He was a member of a number of marching bands playing trumpet back in the 60’s most notable the Jolly Jesters.
When his two sons joined Scouting he became an assistant leader of 213th. He also was the Leader of one of the first Venture troops in Toronto.
When they moved to their cottage in Innisfil Tony became a very active member of the Alcona Beach Club and the community. In 1996, Innisfil presented him with the “Senior of the Year” award. Tony loved singing and entertaining. In addition to being in the St. John Vianney choir he would entertain residents in Retirement Homes and Nursing Homes throughout Simcoe/Muskoka.
Tony was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus, a dedicated usher at his church and a proud member of the Simcoe County concert band playing trumpet.
The family would like to give special thanks to the caring Doctors, nurses and staff at Southlake. If desired, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
