Annie Mona Vienneau
November 18, 1933 – January 30, 2020
Annie Mona Vienneau (Henwood), 86, passed on 30 January, 2020, surrounded by her family, love, song and prayers. Annie was born on 18 November, 1933, in Toronto, ON, as the Santa Clause Parade was going by.
At the age of three, Annie moved to Springhill, NS, with her family. In her younger years, she enjoyed skating, dancing, musicals at the Capital Theatre in Springhill and her many friends. She started her education at the age of four; graduating from Springhill High School at the age of 16. She entered the Nursing Program at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow and began her nursing career at the Springhill Mine Clinic providing care to injured miners.
Annie married William Vienneau in 1953 and after the 1956 Explosion at the Springhill Mine; they moved their family to Glace Bay, Cape Breton, where her husband was employed by Devco. Annie went to work at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay where she worked for many years. She retired from nursing from Seaview Manor after a lengthy career.
They settled on Pleasant Street in Dominion where they raised their five children. Annie and Willie were foster parents to many babies over the years, often parenting two at a time. At one point, they had three babies for a short period, but they always had enough love to share. Annie loved Dominion and was community minded being the Pleasant Street resident nurse always on call. She was the consummate Momma Bear being a strong advocate for her children in all things, including protesting to keep the sand on Dominion Beach, running for Town Council and a member of the Home and School Association. She was a member of the St. Eugene’s CWL, the Rebecka Lodge, CB Artist’s Association, Senior’s Club, Dart and Bowling Leagues and WWG Baptist Church. Annie thoroughly enjoyed dressing up in costume for the annual Halloween display on Pleasant Street. She enjoyed different card clubs, the casino and a good party.
As much a good “Ma” to her brood, she was an even better Nannie, Great Nannie and Great- Great Nannie. She made so many trips to Halifax to visit her “babies,” her family affectionately called her the Road Runner.
After the death of her husband, Annie moved to Eastern Passage where she resided with her daughter, Marlene and son-in-law John for 17 years. She was a member of the Eastern Passage Baptist Church and she made many loving friends. She travelled extensively during that time with her friends and her family. She enjoyed sailing, hosting many a holiday themed party and tea parties with her friends. Annie enjoyed dinners at the Shearwater Yacht club, Neptune Theatre, dining out and the Casino; she was always up for a trip over the water to the casino.
Annie was predeceased by her husband, William; parents, Marjorie and Lloyd Henwood; brother, Reggie; and twin Sister, Alice, in infancy. She is survived by her five children, Paul (Marian), Claire (Bernie), Marlene (John), Valerie (Robert) and Jennette (Yves); her nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many great friends in Eastern Passage and Dominion.
Annie has been cremated. As per her wishes, there will be no service. However, Annie requested a Celebration of Life with love and laughter to be held on Saturday, 8 February, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Shearwater Yacht Club in Shearwater, NS. Annie’s remains will be interred with her husband in Forrest Haven Memorial Gardens in Sydney, NS, at a later date. A Celebration of Life for her family and friends in Cape Breton will be held at the home of her son Paul and daughter-in-law, Marian, immediately following.
