Anna Marie (Beeson) Gillis
1937-2020
Gillis, Anna Marie
– Whycocomagh. It is with a deep sense of
loss that we announce the passing of Anna Marie Gillis (Beeson), age
83, at her home in Whycocomagh on Thursday, October 22nd, 2020. At the
time of her passing, Anna was surrounded by her loving family.
Anna was gifted with a quick wit and strong intellect, which
made time with her incredibly enjoyable. Throughout her life, Anna
held several jobs, including various roles at Canada Post.
Without a doubt, however, her most important role was that
of a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Anna’s
commitment to her family and community shaped her life (and
ours)—fueled by a selfless focus on others and an altruistic
desire to give help whenever and wherever needed.
Her natural caregiving nature inspired her many hobbies
including baking, cooking and sewing (many a Christmas stocking).
Not to be underestimated, she also had a fierce competitive
streak, especially when it came to her card-playing and
puzzle-solving. Another source of entertainment and comfort for Anna
was music, in particular spiritual and Scottish selections, her
soundtrack until the very end.
Anna was deeply committed to her faith, which helped her to
accept and face the many challenges that arose during her life. She
was a long-standing member of the Stewart United Church, a valued
member of the Skye Glen UCW, as well as the Order of the Eastern Star
(Celtic Star Chapter 19). She also belonged to the Bayview Senior
Citizens Club and the Whycocomagh Waterfront Center Seniors Walking
Program.
Anna was the daughter of the late Arthur and Sadie (Morrison)
Beeson. She is survived by her children: Kevin (Sandra),
Skye Glen; Darrell (Irene), Mabou; Craig (Terry), Whycocomagh; Barry
(Chrissie), Bucklaw; Jesslyn (Michael Keeling), Skye Glen; Marion
(Lorne MacMillan), Elmsdale; grandchildren, Tamzin (Ryan); Meghan
(Jill); Devon (Anna); Jason; Adam (Nicole); Jordan (Rebecca); Kinnon
(Harmonie); Annie; Riley (Neely); great-grandchildren, Adelaide;
Archer; Alec; Monroe; William; brother, Norman, sister-in-law,
Bernice; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband,
Murdock “Muckie” and daughter, Cheryl; sister, Jessie, and
brothers, Dan Hughie, Peter, and Winston (in infancy).
The family wishes to express sincere thanks and gratitude to
those who helped care for Anna, especially the medical staff of the
Victoria County Memorial and Cape Breton Regional Hospitals.
Special thanks to Dr. Ritter and the Palliative Team, as
well as the Continuing Care nursing staff.
