Ann Bradley (MacNairn) Ross
1931 ~ 2020
Ann Bradley (MacNairn) Ross, in her 90th year, recently of Lakeview Manor but mostly from the Old West End of Moncton, died on October 31st, 2020. She was born at the old King Street hospital in Moncton in a snowstorm in 1931 to her parents Jean (Stewart) and Fraser MacNairn. Ann always said she was a surprise baby, but given Ann’s personality, her parents probably loved the surprise of a child with so much energy and enthusiasm for life.
Ann’s only brother was Jack (his wife Grace Brecken). Ann grew up on Gordon Street surrounded by many aunts and uncles, and playing on the train tracks next to her house. She maintained childhood friendships until late in life, still lunching with school chums well into her 80’s. Ann attended Victoria and Edith Cavell Schools, graduated from Moncton High, and took business courses at Mount Allison, before working at Chrysler Canada when it opened. She married Murray Ross over 65 years ago and left the business world to take on the business of being a mom to her three children. Ann and Murray took good care of each other, and of their family and friends.
Ann will be forever missed by her husband, Murray, and by her children David (and Julie Yasuda), Diane (and Blair Lawrence), and Deane (and Craig Wight). She lavished love and attention for years on her nine grand-children: Carol Walker (and Greg) of California, Fraser Ross (and Leah Cunningham) of Petawawa, Emily Ross (and Oscar Chabrand Hernandez) of Vancouver, Alex Lawrence of Ottawa, Ian Lawrence of Winnipeg, Mia Lawrence of Moncton, Cameron Maxwell (and Carly Hamilton) of Berwick, Andrew Wight (and Irenee) of Boston, and Stuart Wight (and Rachelle) of Charlottetown. Ann also had two great-grandsons, James and Emmett Walker, a daughter-in-law, Bobbie Ross, and a son-in-law, Gael Maxwell. In addition, Ann was a loving aunt who stayed very connected to her five MacNairn and seven Ross nieces and nephews, and their partners and families.
Ann was a busy, capable, enthusiastic person with a variety of interests and talents. Her life included lots of delicious cooking, hosting Sunday night dinners for many years for her 17 family members, her work as a school secretary at Edith Cavell School and other locations, involvement with IODE, bridge club and bridge marathons, elections, and her engagement in party politics from the early days of LJR and equal opportunity. She was a loyal member of Wesley Memorial United Church until its closure, and spent years in the choir, in UCW roles, and involved in all of the work of her church. She volunteered for over a decade at the Moncton Hospital, and enjoyed a large circle of friendships and connections with so many people.
Ann and Murray enjoyed many travel adventures together – cruises, road trips, bus trips to NYC, adventures in Europe and the UK, and visits to family everywhere. Ann was keenly interested in the performing arts – local drama, Sistema, the NB Symphony, and everything onstage at the Capitol Theatre. As well, Ann had a sharp mind and was interested in the world around her, in all aspects of politics and citizenship. Her opinions were strong and so was her enthusiasm for life and community connections.
Ann and Murray spent over fifty summers together welcoming family and friends to their cottage on First Avenue at Pointe-du-Chene where they had both vacationed as young people as well. Their cottage was full of food, fun, card games on the porch, lively conversations, newspapers, laughter, and potluck suppers. Ann enjoyed biking and swimming at the wharf with Murray; they were an inspiring pair. She made sure that there was always room at the table for another guest, and made each of us feel like we were the most important person to walk through the door.
Since 2017, Ann has enjoyed the warm and caring atmosphere of the Salvation Army Lakeview Manor. We have many happy memories of events there with Ann, and we want to express our deepest appreciation to the caring and professional staff members who made her feel so loved, especially when Covid-19 restrictions began this year.
A private service to celebrate Ann’s life and memory will be held later in November.
In lieu of flowers, Ann asked years ago that you consider a donation to the Moncton YMCA which she loved and attended since she was young. Or feel free to donate to another cause that is near to your heart. Visit a friend, drop off food for someone who is not well, care and be present with your support – these are the things Ann did for us, and she will live on in our actions.
The family invites you to sign an online book of condolences at: www.funerairepassagefuneral.ca.
