Andrew’s Obituary
Passed away peacefully at Grey Gables Long Term Care in Markdale, Ontario on October 24, 2020 at the age of 93. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years Theresia (nee Winkler) and brothers Bela and Matthias. Will be deeply missed by his sons Andy (Kathy) and Ron, grandchildren Matthew and Jessica, brother Paul (Roberta), sisters -in-law Brigitta and Lisi (Sepp) and all his nieces and nephews and their families.
Andy was born in Budaors, Hungary in 1927, the second oldest of 4 brothers. After the war, he left with his family to live in Bretzfeld Germany where he married his childhood sweetheart Theresia. After five years in Germany, he and his brothers emigrated to Toronto and Chicago. Theresia and son Andy joined him later once he was established in Toronto.
Andy was a natural mechanic with a genius for figuring how out things worked and fixing any kind of machinery. He quickly made himself indispensable and was promoted to a managerial position at a large sporting goods manufacturer. In the late 50s he was offered the opportunity to set up and manage a new factory in Jamaica, West Indies for his employer. While in Jamaica, he built a sailboat and a motorboat which he used to go fishing early in the morning before work most days. His second son Ron was born during their time in Jamaica. He ran the factory in Jamaica together with Theresia until the mid- 60s when they returned to Toronto.
Once back in Canada, he and Theresia built a house near Bolton and opened their own business making and repairing hockey equipment. They worked together side by side for decades running a successful business before selling and taking a well- deserved retirement, eventually moving to a condo in Woodbridge. While living there, Andy became a member of the board and was kept busy putting his handyman skills to good use helping his neighbors – he could fix almost anything.
Andy and Theresia enjoyed travelling – they returned frequently to Europe and had many other adventures around the world. They enjoyed gardening, dancing, and playing cards with their many friends. Andy loved to play pool, particularly with his grandchildren Matt and Jessica.
But his number one passion was flying. After acquiring his pilot’s license, Andy bought his own plane – his pride and joy – a Beech Mooney. He was an enthusiastic member of a flying club in Brampton and took frequent day trips with his flying buddies to various places around the province and the U.S., plus occasional longer trips as far afield as New Brunswick and Florida.
After health issues forced him to give up his pilot’s license, he embraced the internet and spent hours connecting and chatting with old friends as well as dozens of new-found friends from all around the world, many of whom shared his love of flying.
He was a very sociable man who would strike up a conversation with everyone he met and easily made friends wherever he went. He will be fondly remembered by many.
The family would like to thank the staff at Grey Gables Long Term Care for their kindness, compassion and affectionate good humour while caring for Andy throughout the past year.
Cremation has been arranged and, due to current Covid -19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life will be held on a later date when all the friends and family can be together. Condolences and memories may be shared online through May Funeral Home, 63 Main St. E., Markdale, ON N0C 1H0 (519-986-3310) www.mayfh.ca.
