Al was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba to William & Mariam Major. He was their third son, coming after big brothers Bill & Bob and was fortunate to have a little sister Marlene, follow after him. After 10 years on the farm, the family moved to Vancouver in 1945, where the kids finished out their schooling at John Oliver Secondary. Al was busy enjoying big city life in the 50’s when he met and married Joanne Bachman. Together they had a daughter Brenda and son Daniel. During this time, Al worked at the shipyard on the tugs and spent years with Bekins Moving & Storage. Al later married Susy Fehr and had three daughters, Tina, Nikki and Gayle. In 1977 the family moved to Alberta where he worked as custodian and bus driver for Barons Consolidated School for 11 years. While in Barons he joined the Elks organization, serving the community with pride. He also volunteered his time as an Umpire for Mens, Ladies and Little League baseball for all the years he lived there. In 1988 the family moved back to BC and settled in the Chilliwack area where he worked a variety of jobs before an early retirement for health reasons. He kept busy with golf, woodworking, grandchildren, trips to Arizona, church activities, serving on the strata council, and numerous trips to the family property.
Al was predeceased by his parents William and Mariam, his first wife Joanne, and his brothers Bill & Bob. He is survived by his feisty sister Marlene (David) Theriau, loving wife Susan of 47 years, children Brenda (Paul) Bouchard, son Danny, Tina (Tabbitha) Major, Nikki (Lance) Hand, and daughter Gayle.
He was blessed with twelve Grandchildren: James, Heather, Tammi (Mike), Amber, Leanne (David), Dallas, Callista, Chase, Jewel, Jaida, Danika & Jaxon.
Great Grandchildren: Tyler, Blake, Kiley, Alytha, Sophia, Chelsea, Olivia and Hailey. He has nieces & nephews all very dear to him, and cousins & friends too numerous to list by name. He was dearly loved.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Chilliwack Church of God 45814 Lewis Ave on Saturday February 1st at 2pm. Reception immediately following the service. Please join us!
