Obituary
1924 – 2020
It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we notify family, friends and neighbours of the passing of our father, Allan David MacDonald, on November 13th, in his 97th year, at Bobier Villa, Dutton. Allan was the last of his generation, being predeceased by his four siblings and their spouses. He also lost his loving wife, Betty (Riseborough) on their 63rd wedding anniversary, in April, 2010, after faithfully caring for her for many years as she declined with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Allan is survived by his five children: Laurie Trueman of Mississauga, Bonnie (Sam) Nikkel of Edmonton, Alberta, Jamie (Judy) MacDonald of White Rock, BC, Amy (Stephen) Hime of Mississauga, Darcy MacDonald of St Thomas, and by 6 grandchildren: Rachel (Logan) Runnalls, Dan (Nicholine) Nikkel, Joel (Lisa) Nikkel, Rebecca (Tim) Shulba, Matthew (Katie) MacDonald, Sarah Hime, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Allan became an Insurance agent in his early 30’s and he was regularly the top producer in his branch for his company. Allan’s honesty and sincerity allowed him the privilege of working with the second and third generations of early clients. He served his clients well into his 80’s.
Allan loved his farm and the maple trees that grew there. Springtime and harvest were opportunities to have his children involved in the farm work with him. He loved the outdoor life and watching the seasons pass.
Allan knew the value of a day’s work. He enjoyed watching baseball and in his senior years became skilled at baking apple pies. He embodied Scottish hospitality and loved to host people at his table. Throughout his life he collected beautiful china and was always pleased when he could use it to serve tea and pie to friends.
Allan was very involved in his community and church. He was an Elder at Duff Presbyterian church, Largie for 50 years. He was a good neighbor and friend. As he grew older, many neighbors stepped up to help him with practical needs. Allan was able to live in his home until he was 93. Losing his sight meant he could no longer live independently and he went into care at Bobier Villa in Dutton in October 2017. There he met many kind and caring workers who created a new circle of friendship for him. A sincere thank you to all who cared for him.
