Alice Elizabeth Bent Friday October 23rd 2020

Alice Elizabeth Bent (September 28, 1953 to October 23, 2020)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a real force of nature, a woman who didn’t know the meaning of half way or taking things easy.
Alice was the soul of generosity and compassion. She could be silly and laugh at herself and with others. And she faced life’s adversities head-on without flinching, while sharing that journey with others, no matter how difficult.
Alice grew up in the Annapolis area, attending Annapolis Royal Regional Academy. She attended Teachers’ College and, after a short stint teaching elementary school, she taught in the North for 2 years, where she developed an interest in Special Education. She went on to University to continue her training and taught the majority of her career in Bridgewater in Special Education, both at Bridgewater High and Park View.
Alice was very involved in Special Olympics and coaching young women’s volleyball, many of whom continued to call her Ms. Bent. She also worked tirelessly with Youth Alternative Society as a volunteer.
Alice was the connector, the glue that held her communities together. She was also the family historian. She loved animals and talked to them constantly. She loved to garden (Wendy would say “farm”). She was very proud of her physical abilities.
In recent years Alice was active in the LGBTQ+ community, helping with the old South Shore Pride dances, organizing a Gay Straight Alliance at Park View, co-organizing an LGBTQ+ Games Night, extending an open invitation to lesbians from far and wide to an annual Langille Lake week-end, and proudly sporting rainbow colours.
Alice was predeceased by her mother, Mary (nee Hunt) and father Harold Bent.
She is survived by her life partner, Wendy Annand, sister, Eileen Fry (Lian Hettema), brother, Brian (Donna), niece, Shilo, nephews, Adrian, Tony and Nathaniel, great nieces, Charlotte, Elizabeth and Georgia. As well as Betty, Kirk and Chris Annand. She is also survived by all those whose lives and hearts she touched over the years. We are better for having known and loved her.
Thank you to the wonderful medical teams we have called upon in the last year and a half, especially Dr. Koleen Jensen, the Ambulatory Care team in Bridgewater, the cancer clinic and chemo nurses, the Emergency room nurses and doctors- you have all made a horrible situation easier.
Celebration of life will be held post-Covid.
Memorial donations may be made to Special Olympics Lunenburg/Queens County or to a charity of your choice, through the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
