Alan O. Garcelon
1930-2020
On Monday, April 20, 2020, Alan O. Garcelon, our beloved
Father and Grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, in
Fredericton, NB. Alan was born on January 26, 1930, in Moncton, New
Brunswick and grew up in Sydney, Cape Breton, and Halifax, Nova
Scotia, graduating from Queen Elizabeth High School.
Alan was predeceased by his parents Fred O. and Margaret Ann
Garcelon. Survived by two sons Michael of Saskatoon, SK, and
David (Kylie) of Banff, AB, grandchildren Tara Campbell (Jolon) of
Saskatoon, SK, James Garcelon (Kimberly) of
Saskatoon, SK, Christopher Garcelon (Emily) of Queenstown, NB, Lana
Garcelon of Calgary, AB and Eric Garcelon of St. Catherines,
ON and two great-grandchildren Lyrikah and Joaquem Campbell of
Saskatoon, SK.
He attended Dalhousie University, where he obtained a
Bachelor of Commerce degree. Following university, he moved to St.
Stephen, New Brunswick and worked for the Garcelon Stamp Company as
General Manager for over 25 years. In 1978 pursuing his
lifelong love of sport, Alan joined the New Brunswick Department of
Sport and Recreation from which he retired in 1995. During
his retirement, he moved to the Canadian Rockies living in Canmore and
Jasper Alberta before returning to reside in
Fredericton.
Alan had a passion for curling and became an avid curler and
dedicated member of the St. Stephen Curling Club, Jasper Curling Club
and Capital Winter Club in Fredericton. Alan skipped his 1960 rink to
win both the NB Provincial and Atlantic Men’s Junior
Championship. In 1978 Alan edited and published
New Brunswick Curling Records along with two
subsequent editions in 1985 and 1993. He was installed as an
honorary lifetime member of the New Brunswick Curling Association and
Capital Winter Club. In 1993 Alan was honoured to be named a
member of the Governor Generals Curling Club in recognition of his
distinguished service to the sport.
Burial will be at the Oak Bay Rural Cemetery at a later
date. For those who wish, donations in Alan’s
memory may be made to Oak Bay Rural Cemetery (Box 261, St. Stephen, NB
E3L 2X2), or the Alzheimer Society of Canada (Alzheimer.ca) and are
appreciated by the family.
