Obituary
HERNTER, Agnes (nee Steinsvoll)
May 12, 1932 – April 11, 2020
Agnes was born and raised in the Allan Hills – the seventh of nine children. She spoke lovingly of her childhood and was close to all her siblings. In 1955, she married Richard and soon after they began their life, on the farm, south of Zelma. Agnes loved life on the farm. She excelled at caring for her home and family. She tended a large garden, raised chickens, and took excellent care of her two children. She was well known for her tasty light buns and crumbly crumb cake. The garden provided sustenance for her family but she took joy and pride in her flower beds and many house plants. She would bring home a slip of a plant from a friend and soon, with her tender care, would have a flourishing, sometimes larger than expected, house plant. Agnes’s quiet nature meant that she wasn’t the organizer of events but she was always willing to bake or cook food for gatherings at South Allan or Zelma; help in the kitchens or clean the church. Agnes was reserved but she possessed an inner strength which allowed her to protect and guide her children and enabled her to continue forward after the devastating blow of first David’s and then Richard’s death. Agnes will be missed by her daughter, Debra Hernter; brother, Grant (Norma); sister, Esther and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Richard (2016); son David (1991); son in law Lawrence Bzdel (2019); parents Andrew and Alice (Turriff); brothers Lloyd (Hilda), Tom (Mary), Roy (Lenore), Stanley; and sisters Mildred (Jim) Murray, Irene (Wayne) Squires. A special thank you to Dr. Mark Fenske and the entire staff of SPH 7th floor for the exceptional care Agnes received. Each kind word or gentle touch made a difference, especially on the days when Debra was not able to be there. A Private Graveside Service was held at the Zelma Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Zelma United Church Heritage Site Committee – Cemetery Fund, c/o Sandra Yausie, 122 Overholt Crescent, Saskatoon, SK, S7N 4S9 or Saskatoon Food Bank.
