It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved father and Afi, Adalsteinn (Steini) Octavius Sigvaldason, at the age of 98, on June 12, 2020 at Citadel Care Home in St. Albert, AB.
Steini is survived by his wife, Margaret; 3 daughters, Beverly (Raymond), Connie (Perry), and Ardis (Michael) and granddaughters, Ashley and Jessica.
Steini was born in Geysir, MB to Gudmundur and Steinunn. He married Margaret Eastman in 1963. In 1946, Steini went to Edmonton to earn Diesel and Auto Mechanics certificates. He also worked for several years on Lake Winnipeg, sometimes freighting fish and logs, and one time he was an engineer on a lake freighter. A self starter, he bought his own bulldozer and cleared land for nearby farmers, as well.
Steini took over our family farm, Fogruvellir. He was a cattle and grain farmer until he retired and sold the farm when he was 72 in 1992. After that, he and Margaret moved to West St. Paul. He enjoyed a couple of acres of land with 4 garages so he could keep doing his favourite hobby, which was woodworking. In 2003, Steini and Margaret moved to Alberta to be nearer to us and our families.
Steini started making furniture when we were growing up. He equipped us with beautiful desks, dressers and more. In the winter, we could hear the saw going in the basement and we were always excited to discover who would receive the next project when it was complete. Over the years he also began to build purple martin bird houses. He was so proud when someone would drive by and stop to ask where they could purchase one of the bird houses he had on his lawn. He never had to advertise.
Steini also loved wrestling. When wrestling was on TV, we had two choices, we could join in or we could leave the room. Steini went to many wrestling matches in Winnipeg and he knew all the wrestling stars by name.
Young at heart and never afraid to try something new, Steini rode the rollercoaster at West Edmonton Mall when he was in his late 70’s. He even tried out water-skiing. When he was 92, he rode on a Sea-doo for the first time. He always liked to be busy and productive, so he always enjoyed helping us and our families in many practical ways. Steini mowed the lawn at Connie’s acreage even into his early 90’s.
Steini spent the last few years of his life at the Citadel Long Term Care Home in St. Albert. He made many friends there and he was well liked. His daily ritual always included a bag of Lays chips and a bottle of pop. Everyone knew of his fondness for sweets. Our family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Citadel for all the kindness and compassion shown to Steini over the years.
We are grateful for all the moments and memories. We are deeply saddened by his passing and we wish him peace. Góða nótt.
