Ada Hamilton
1925-2020
It is with sadness that the family of Ada Hamilton, age 94, of
Erb’s Cove, NB, announces her death which occurred on
Friday, May 8, 2020 at her home. Born in Kingston, NB, on
November 30, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Myrtle
(Taber) Scribner.
Mom lived in a different era. She walked to a one-room
schoolhouse at Nutter’s Wharf (now Whiting Lane). At home,
she helped her dad on the farm. This served to prepare her for the
busy life of farming, being a wife, and a mother. Mom gave Dad a hand
at whatever needed to be done. She helped him in the woods, the
fields, and she had the task of washing the cream separator
daily. We always had enough food for the winter with the
large gardens that we produced. We can remember picking berries and
washtubs full of peas and beans. They made maple syrup, butter, jams,
and pickles. She rarely ever left the area except for a
couple trips to visit family in Boston and Toronto. Although she
couldn’t get out much over the past few years, she enjoyed
keeping in touch with family and friends on the phone. Our family is
used to having large gatherings for holidays and birthdays and in her
younger years she was known for cooking big meals and homemade pies. A
staple of hers was buckwheat pancakes for breakfast.
Her grandchildren will treasure many special
memories. Although Nannie didn’t have a
driver’s licence, she always drove the big truck around the
field carefully, picking up the bales of hay. Sometimes, we
grandchildren, were on the back of the truck with an adult or building
hay forts in the field. We remember walking, skiing, four-wheeling, or
cycling to Nannie’s house. She would always make sure that
we had enough to eat, and one of everyone’s favourites was
her homemade bread. While going to Nannie’s house you always
felt welcomed and loved. She was so happy seeing people come to visit.
Nannie and Grampie’s love for each other during their 70
years of marriage has left us with a valuable legacy.
The family would like to thank our brother Harvey, for his
care and dedication towards Mom and Dad over the past several
years.
Ada is survived by her children: Mae White (Bill), Gordon Hamilton
(Rita), Harvey Hamilton, Eileen Duncan, and Alma King (Marven);
