KLIEN, Sr. Lorraine OSU
Sister Lorraine (Anna Mary) Klein, osu, (Prelate) daughter of John and Karolina (Hummel) Klein was welcomed into eternal life by a loving God on April 8, 2020 at St Angela Merici Residence at the age of 90 years.
Anna Mary was born on May 25, 1929 at Grosswerder (Primate, SK), the second of twelve children. Times were poor, the family was growing, children were going off to school and everyone was helping along, working hard at outdoor and household chores. In 1943 school days ended for Anna Mary as her help was needed at home. Then in spring of 1944 the family packed up all their possessions and journeyed to possible greener pastures in Thorsby, Alberta where they took up mixed farming. Anna Mary’s mom often spoke with her about Sisters she knew and her own desire to join them, however lack of education had seemed to be a deterrent. No doubt her mother prayed and encouraged her daughter while her father prompted her to get in touch with her cousin, Sister Leona. After much conversation and many questions, her dad, and oldest brother set off by horse and buggy, with a few possessions, and took her to Denzil where the Sisters would be teaching Summer Catechism until leaving for Prelate on July 16, 1946. Although Anna Mary started the school year that fall at St. Angela’s Academy, she was soon asked to assist in the kitchen, help with housework and supervise the activities of the boarders. On December 8, 1946, along with seven companions, Anna Mary requested to join the Ursuline Community as a Postulant beginning her time of Formation. On August 15, 1949 she professed her Temporary Vows, as Sister Lorraine. These three years were followed by her Perpetual Profession on August 15, 1952.
Sister Lorraine struggled with personal feelings of inferiority because she had not completed school as had her companion Sisters. As well she found much of the Formation program difficult, but through perseverance and a faithful prayer life she succeeded. Her first stint at “mission life” was in Billimun, SK, which she found very challenging due to age differences as well as the sickness of one of the Sisters. In the years following, domestic duties and responsibilities in Denzil, Barthel, Goodsoil, Viscount, Tramping Lake, Fox Valley, Mendham, Liebenthal, Prelate and Yorkton, were filled with challenges and years of grace. In Yorkton where she was serving in a small community of four, she spread her wings into activities in the parish and community, teaching catechism, conducting Arts and Crafts in the Nursing Home and reaching out where she saw a need. In 1971 she was employed as an occupational therapist attendant, implementing and carrying out programs with long-term patients. In 1978 she was off to Edmonton where a similar position was waiting for her at St. Joseph’s Hospital. This position was later referred to as Recreation Therapist Attendant. One year later she was asked to assume the position of volunteer coordinator, which she held for four years. She then joined Grandview Extended Care Staff as Recreation Therapy Attendant where she could be more directly involved with patients. Since this was part time for Sister Lorraine she made use of her other hours to provide Companion Care for individuals in home or hospital. Any free time or spare hours would find Sister Lorraine busy with one craft or another, new or old, as she was always an avid crafter. Sister Lorraine took very little time for herself, however in 1996-97 she was invited and encouraged to slow down by participating in a nine-month spiritual renewal sabbatical in Arnprior, ON, which provided her with a fresh look on life. Following her sabbatical she transferred to Saskatoon to be of assistance to our Senior Sisters and to continue her Companion Care services, which kept her busy and fulfilled. In October 2014, along with a number of other Sisters she moved to Trinity Manor where she continued her ministry of visits to the lonely, who always held a place in her heart. When she moved to St. Angela Merici Residence due to failing health, she was deeply missed by friends and companions to whom she had endeared herself at Trinity Manor. Sister Lorraine was predeceased by her father, John on June 29, 1973, her mother, Karolina on December 28, 1986, her sister Wendalena, her brothers John and Valentine, sister in law, Marjorie and brothers-in-law Norman Bush and Bernie Bawol.
Sister Lorraine will be deeply missed by her Ursuline Community, her siblings Philip (Dorothy), Tony (Rose), Clara (Bernie), Leo (Shirley), Joseph, Sister Leona, OSU, Kathleen (Ron Dyck), and Dolores (Nelson Hannem), sister-in-law Marilyn and many nieces, nephews and friends.
