It is with sadness that the family of the late Stella Gladys Ryan (nee Hewlett), age 100, of Robert’s Arm, NL announces her passing at the Green Bay Health Care Centre, Springdale, on Saturday, April 4, 2020.
Stella was born February 3, 1920 to Israel Hewlett and Thirsa (Oxford) Stuckless. After her father passed away when she was only three years old, her mother re-married to Abner Anthony. Abner was the only father that Stella ever knew.
She Married Ronald John Ryan at The Salvation Army, Pilley’s Island, on August 7, 1937 and then moved to Robert’s Arm to begin their family.
Stella’s first IPad, would have been the slate and chalk. Education was difficult to come by and it would be through the raising of her children that Stella educated herself. Late in her life, she wrote a book about growing up, and has written abundance of poetry. In her 80’s, she decided that she would learn to play the guitar. She had a great love for music but was the first to admit that she could not sing. If Stella had a fault, that would have been it, because as a mother, friend, aunt, grandmother and Christian, Stella was amazing.
Like most women, Stella was a mother to not only her own children but all the neighbour’s children as well. Her door was open to friends and strangers alike and there was always a cup of tea and an understanding ear to listen. She could always find the best in everyone. Stella was affectionally known as Aunt Stella to family and friends alike. She loved everyone and was loved by everyone in return.
She was a role model and a wonderful woman of God. As an active member of The Salvation Army she took part in the Home League, lead worship, lead testimony meeting and played the kettle drum. Stella was also the favorite Sunday School teacher of many children.
In 2010, Stella moved to the Springdale Retirement Center. This quickly became her home; a home full of new friends, and old acquaintances, many of whom were cousins. These were her Golden Years, as she was so happy and contented.
Stella often questioned why she was so privileged to live such a long life, but only to a point as she would not question the will of God.
She is predeceased by her, husband Ronald John Ryan; parents Israel (Thirsa) Hewlett; sisters Minnie Martin, Marjorie Paddock; step-father Abner Anthony; grandson Dion Ryan; son-in-law Mathew Hammond; daughter-in-law Patsy Fudge-Ryan.
Stella leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children, Maxwell (Doreen) Ryan, Olive Hammond, John (Ruth) Ryan, Lloyd (Ping) Ryan, Sandy (Joan) Ryan, Phyllis (Lester) Hancock, Charles (Carla) Ryan, Adonnas (Pat) Ryan, Susan (Rayfield) Slade, Paul Ryan; also leaving to mourn, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, as well as many great and wonderful friends.
Ever Remembered, Ever Loved – Forever In Our Hearts!
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at the Springdale Retirement Center, the place Stella called home for the past 10 years. As well to the doctors and nurses at the Green Bay Health Care Centre, who cared for her at her last moments.
