Obituary
It is with sad hearts that the family of Leroy “Roy” Wall, age 86, of Swift Current and formerly of Main Centre, announce his passing at the Meadows in Swift Current, SK on Sunday, March 29, 2020. Leroy went to his Heavenly home peacefully, with his loving wife Dora by his side.
Due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Roy Wall, donations made to West Bank Bible Camp would be appreciate by the family.
Leroy “Roy” Kenneth Wall was born August 4, 1933 in Moose Jaw, SK. At the age of seven months he was adopted by Henry & Mary (Nickel) Wall of Main Centre, SK. He was their only child, lovingly raised on the family farm. Roy attended the Goethe School, where he walked a mile there and back every day until its closure when he was in grade nine. Subsequently, he took grade ten at the Main Centre School.
Due to his father’s poor health, Roy assumed the farming responsibilities at the age of 17. During those first years he appreciated the help of his neighbor, Henry Rempel.
For recreation, he enjoyed playing hockey on the slough with his friends. Roy was instrumental in building the new rink in Main Centre and everyone enjoyed playing many lively games indoors. During this time, he had his eye on a beautiful brunette, Dora Block, and soon he was taking her along to games in surrounding communities. Roy & Dora were married in Main Centre on July 27, 1958 and were blessed with four sons — Garth, Stan, Robin, and Brent. In 1964, due to the growing family, they built a larger house on the yard. Roy was very supportive of the boys’ sporting endeavors, coaching and driving to countless hockey games across the countryside. This continued years later as his grandsons played hockey as well.
Roy & Dora were very involved with the Main Centre Church. He accepted Christ as his Savior at a young age and was baptized as a teenager in the Saskatchewan River. Roy was on the Board of Trustees at the church, where he took care of any repairs. He, along with a few others, worked on a church cemetery project to enclose the cemetery and build a gated entrance. Maintaining the cemetery was very important to him.
In addition to the one quarter section his parents owned, Roy rented two quarters of land in the Gouldtown area starting in 1956 for 56 years. To supplement their farming, Roy and three neighbors formed a co-op group where they purchased and shared machinery together. Over the years, Roy purchased additional land and enjoyed raising registered Black Angus cattle. He took immaculate care of the yard and planted many evergreens, fruit trees, and bushes. He cherished spending time outside with his grandchildren, doing everything from hunting gophers or picking raspberries. In addition, he worked on many projects with his father-in-law, David Block, building Quonsets and other building projects, including the Herbert Heritage Manor.
He volunteered on the Co-op Boards in Main Centre and Herbert, and the Saskatchewan Wheat Board committee. Roy also served on the Recreation Board and worked tirelessly at the Main Centre Community Hall.
In 1995, with Dora’s encouragement, Roy initiated a search for his birth mother. In January 1997 he and Dora travelled to Creston, B.C. to meet his birth mother, Eva Pettyjohn (Hauser). He was united with our step-siblings — Mervin, Audrey, Neomee, and Linda. It was a joyous reunion and they stayed in close contact. In the coming years, they were all able to travel to Main Centre to spend time at the farm.
In 2003, due to failing health at the age of 70, Roy rented his land for the next ten years while he started a hobby of restoring antique tractors. Roy & Dora celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2008 and bought a fifth wheel trailer, enjoying many camping trips for the next several years. After spending 81 years on the family farm, Roy & Dora made the decision to sell the farm and retire to Swift Current in 2014. It was a difficult transition for Roy, but he enjoyed sitting in his sunroom looking out over the creek, watching the geese and other wildlife. Roy spent the last sixteen months in care homes. First, in Gull Lake and finally at the Meadows in Swift Current, where he was well cared for.
Roy is lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Dora Wall; his three sons, Garth (Rita) Wall, Stan (Lisa Iannacone) Wall, and Brent (Andrea Exner) Wall; his five grandchildren and their families, Morgan (Marcus) Frohlick, Bryce (Jennifer) Wall (Grayson and Vera), Brendon (Chelsey Fenwick) Wall, Caitlin (Todd Tinant) Wall, and Xanen Wall; his step-brother, Mervin Pettyjohn (Jayne Price); his three step-sisters, Audrey Newman, Neomee (Al) Dupras, and Linda Steele; his three brothers-in-law; his five sisters-in-law; and by many nieces and nephews.
Roy was predeceased by his son, Robin Wall (2014); his father, Henry Wall (1956); his mother, Mary Wall (1969); his birth mother, Eva Pettyjohn (1998); and by five brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
