Andrew “Andy”‘s Obituary
SMITH, Andrew Lyle – died on Friday, March 20, at the Roseway Manor palliative care room in Shelburne. He was known as “Mr. Smith” by his many colleagues, students and basketball players at SAR/Argyle. He was known to others as Andy; an avid paddler, a sailor, and a lover of the sea and moving waterways which he aptly described in his book Paddling the Tobeatic. As water drew him to the ocean in his younger California surfing years, it continued its appeal in the many years of sailing in the Abuptic Bay, and time spent paddling the meandering Tusket River and its tributaries. He has always searched out bodies of moving water. Water was soothing to his spirit and soul, just as the sound of music permeated his home daily. He is survived by his wife, Virginia “Ginny” (née Spurlin), son Shannon (Rachel) and his granddaughter Lily Smith. He is predeceased by his son Corrie, his sister Evelyn and his parents Martha and Franklin Smith. A memorial service will be held on the grounds of the Ardnamurchan Club, once the world becomes a calmer place and people can travel and congregate freely. At that time, family and friends will join to celebrate his return to the sea. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations can be made to Roseway Manor, Shelburne, the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, TREPA, Southwest Paddlers, or to the Parkinson Association of Canada. Cards may be sent to Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, NS, B5A 3N1.
