Wedenig, Karl
January 22, 1932 – February 21, 2020
Karl Wedenig, of Saskatoon, passed away peacefully at City Hospital on February 21, 2020. He was born in Kampach, Kärnten, Austria on January 22, 1932 as the third child of the family. In 1939, the family moved to Wolfsberg where Karl went to school to become a furniture/cabinetmaker. He immigrated to Saskatoon in 1954 where he met and later married his loving wife, M. (Leni) Ritter.
Karl leaves to mourn his dear wife, Leni; his children Monika (Phillip) Hnatiuk and Carl (Tracey) Wedenig; his grandchildren Melissa Ng (Apollo), Tiffany Hnatiuk (Jason, Kyle, Robin), Pierce Hnatiuk (Shauna, Dion, Daylen), Travis Hnatiuk (Kaitie, Khai, Hailey), Carl John (C.J.) Wedenig III and Warner Wedenig; his great grandchildren Orion and Aries Ng; his brothers Walter (Sonia) Wedenig and Ewald (Eva) Wedenig of Surrey, BC and from Austria; his sisters Josefine Ram, Hilde (Fritz) Weber, Hedwig (Karl) Wuggenig, Veronika Natter, Gertrude (Herbert) Spiegel, Gisela Krenn, Maria (Fritz) Kummer, his sisters-in-law Inge Wedenig and Dorli Wedenig, his brother-in-law John (Eileen) Ritter of Saskatoon and numerous nephews and nieces.
Karl was predeceased by his parents, Johann and Rosalia Wedenig and his brothers, Willibald, Rudolf, Johann and sister Rosalia Tatschl.
During his first two years in Canada, Karl worked as a cabinetmaker. He then moved to Whitehorse and worked as a carpenter for two years before moving back to Saskatoon. In 1969, he became employed with the City of Saskatoon as a Building Inspector. He retired as a Senior Building Inspector in 1997, after 28 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and the people he worked with.
Karl loved his family and was always willing to give a helping hand. He was actively engaged in St. Mary’s Parish, the Knights of Columbus, the German Cultural Centre, the Elks, Toastmasters, Folkfest and various other organizations. Karl liked sports, travel and loved to dance but mostly enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
The family would like to thank the Royal University Hospital staff, physicians and surgeon in the Cardio Unit for their care; as well as the City Hospital staff and physicians in Unit 6200.
In celebration of his life, the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. This service will be held at the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church located at 114 Kingsmere Place, with Rev. Darryl Millette as Celebrant. In lieu of flowers or donations, Karl’s wish was that you do a Kindness to someone in memory of him.
