Peggy (Muriel) Long, age 95, passed away peacefully at Spruce Lodge on February 20, 2020 with her family by her side. Born in Brighton Sus, England. Peggy (Ferguson) was the oldest child in the family of Marianne (Taylor) and Albert Gunn. She was the loving wife of Ernest who predeceased her in 2006. Also predeceased by her daughter and best friend Linda Clements 2016. She is survived by her son Christopher and son-in-law John Clements. Her wit and laughter will be missed by her grandsons Jeffery and Jamie Clements and great grandsons Hayden and Garrett Clements. Peggy was also predeceased by sister Barbara and brother Lionel (Mary). She is survived by her sisters Kathleen, Jessie and Jackie and by her brothers Leslie (Ann) and Jimmy (Marion) and a brother-in-law Roy, all of whom reside in the U.K. In her teens, Peggy worked as general clerk and house maid and helped her parents with her many brothers and sisters. At nineteen, Peggy joined the Women’s Land Army and Timber Corps to contribute to war efforts. She was sent to work on the outlaying Farms so that the men could enlist in England’s Military and to ensure Continued Food Sources. Coming from an urban centre Like Brighton, Peggy found the W.L.A. to be quite an adventure. While in the W.L.A., Peggy met the love of her life, her “Piano Man” Ernest. On May 10, 1945 they married and in 1946 Peggy came to Canada as a British “War Bride” and joined Ernest in building a life together. That life spanned the next sixty years and was packed with great stories and memories. Peggy may be remembered by some of her letters to the editor in the Beacon Herald. Others may remember her speaking to area students about her wartime experiences. Her family will always remember her stories, her wit and her positive outlook. We are so grateful for all those who assisted “Peggy” in the past years. The staff, support staff and volunteers of Woodland Towers, and more recently Spruce Lodge and Dr. Thompson, her family physician. Your care, consideration and respectful assistance will never be forgotten. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth through the W.G Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford. 519.271.7411. www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
