Obituary for
Rita Marie Yvette Hurley (Marchand)
Mrs. Rita Hurley (Marchand)
Mrs. Rita Hurley, born Marchand, died peacefully in her sleep, at Starwood Long Term Care facility, on February 3rd, 2020, surrounded by her loving husband, Jerry and members of her family. Daughter of late Aurore Brouillette and late Alfred Marchand, she will be mourned by her best friend and husband of 60 years, Jerry Hurley, her children Louise (Michel), Claude (Marla) and Dominique as well as her grandchildren Isabelle (Jean), Jean-Michel (Frédérique), Caroline (Kylen), and 3 great grand-children.
Rita was born and grew up in a large family in Joliette, Quebec. She was orphaned early, and was raised by her big brother Bernard and his wife Gertrude. She completed her schooling and nursing studies, and was then assigned operating room duties in Joliette. Wanting to see the world, Rita accepted an officer’s Commission as a nursing sister, and served in Trenton (Ontario), Portage-la-Prairie (Manitoba), Nottingham (UK), and Marville (France).
It was in Marville where she met the man of her life, aviation engineering officer Jerry Hurley. They were married on December 3, 1960, and Rita then dedicated herself to creating a good family life.
After that, she re-qualified as a nurse and was in the first cohort of the palliative wing of the Elizabeth Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa. After several years of dedication to others, Rita and Jerry packed their bags to see the world: Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Ireland, as well as to several other destinations. Rita imparted to her family her love of travel, of things done well, of good food, of theater, of music, and of the importance of family and tradition.
A memorial service for Rita will be held on Saturday, February 8th 2020 at the chapel of Hulse Playfair &McGarry Funeral Home located at 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa. Visitation will be held from 1pm to 2:30 pm. This will be followed by the service at 2:30 pm. A short reception will follow.
