It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of James (Jim) Sheloff,
who passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov.28 at the LaVerendrye
Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario. Jim was born in Brandon, Manitoba on
June 7, 1940, the youngest of four boys, later followed by one sister,
Anne.
Jim started work at an early age, working odd jobs to ensure he
had enough pocket money to attend the Saturday matinee, his favorite
western movies. He later moved on to Alberta, and there joined the
Canadian Forces, specifically the Second Regiment Royal Canadian Horse
Artillery. In 1963, he met and married his wife of 57 years, Gloria
(Wilson) and in January1964, they were rotated overseas to Germany, where
he spent three years as part of the peacekeeping forces. He left the
forces in 1967, and they moved to the Rainy River District, and
eventually built a home in Carpenter Township, where they resided for 47
years. He became a building contractor, and built and renovated many
homes in the district before he semi-retired in 1999, due to health
issues, going on to later work at Cloverleaf Grocery for 8 years. He was
never a guy to sit still for long, and a rousing dance tune always got
him going, being active members of the local square dance clubs for 30
years. Another passion was classic cars, and he had a few, before
finally settling on his ‘59 Ford, and road trips were often enjoyed on
the week-ends. Jim was a volunteer fire fighter for many years, and
served on the Fair Board, He was a past member of the Royal Canadian
Legion, Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star, and Borderland
Shrine Club.
Jim leaves behind his wife, Gloria, sons Curtis (Harriet), Colin
(Diane), Grand-daughter Amber (Josh Miller) and two dear Great-Grand
sons, Seger and Rush, who always brought a smile to his face. Also
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, Fred and Mary Shiloff, brothers
Peter, Bill and Mike, and sister Anne, his mother and father-in-law,
Dorothy and Roy Wilson, sister-in-law, Kay Wilson, and brother-in-law,
David Wilson. As per Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a
private service will be held at a later date.
If desired, donations in Jim’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer
Society/Kenora/Rainy River District c/o of Northridge Funeral Home Ltd.,
