CHRISTOPHER SMITH
September 5, 1953 – December 9, 2020.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Christopher Smith on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at St. Boniface Hospital. He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Sandra, and son, Cameron, as well as his partner Gracelynn and her daughters, Charlemagne and Denise. He also leaves to mourn his ex-wife, Sheila Bockstael, his brother, Peter, his cousins, Deborah, Kelly and Laura, and his aunt, Joan Jamieson.
Chris was born in Montreal on September 5, 1953 to his parents, Sydney Smith and Barbara Jamieson. He was predeceased by his parents as well as his father’s siblings; Jim, Shirley and Joan Smith of Barbados. Chris will be remembered for his fun-loving, carefree spirit and generous nature. He was a terrific hockey player in his youth, and has always been a die-hard fan of the Montreal Canadiens. His education took him to the Lodge School for Boys in Barbados, to McGill University in Montreal, and eventually the University of Denver, where he pursued a Master’s degree in International Studies. Chris continued playing hockey and made lifelong friends in Denver, where he was known for his positive, charming personality at Fagan’s Bar. There, Chris met Sheila and they eventually settled in Winnipeg to start their next chapter.
Chris was very proud of his Bajan heritage and had a passion for international cuisine. He is also remembered for his love of cooking, fishing, skating, and all sports. Throughout his long career with the provincial government, he demonstrated a passion for promoting Manitoba internationally and creating connections with communities around the world. He was known to many for his steadfast support of local businesses; wherever he was living, he wasn’t shy to integrate with the local community. In his retirement, he continued to find adventure in travel both locally and abroad. He expanded his interests to include cycling, gardening, community service and woodworking.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caring personnel at St. Boniface Hospital for the care and support given to our father.
There will not be a funeral service at this time. We look forward to hearing your memories of Chris on this page. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Christopher may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.
Rest in peace, Dad.
