SPANNIER Lloyd —

SPANNIER, Lloyd

1933 – 2020
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Loyd Spannier. He passed away peacefully, at home, on December 11, 2020, at the age of 87. He is survived by his brother Donn Spannier; nephews and nieces Grant (Judy), Bryan (Twyla), Karen (Tim), Jarrett (Tracy), and Dellmari (David); and numerous extended family members.
Loyd was born in 1933 and was raised on the farm in Fort Qu’Appelle, SK. In 1964, he and his family left Saskatchewan and moved to British Columbia. Loyd arrived in Kelowna towing his horse trailer and looking for work. He was directed to a work site on Lawrence Avenue where apartment buildings were being constructed and was hired on the spot by Robert E. (Bob) Spall. Loyd was handed a tool belt and the horse (King) was turned out in a nearby orchard for the afternoon.
In 1966, when Bob Spall was hired as the construction superintendent for the original Mission Hill Winery, he brought his two colleagues, Loyd Spannier and Isao Terai, along to work on the project. Loyd worked at Mission Hill Winery from the first trip to the site February 4, 1966, to the day he retired in 1999.
Loyd was an avid horseman and had a gifted hand for gardening. He constructed his own greenhouse and produced an abundance of vegetables in his very large garden. He was always willing to lend a hand and his expertise as a carpenter, electrician, and machinist to anyone who needed it.
Though Loyd could be perceived as a little rough around the edges, he possessed a keen mind, a very kind heart, and a terrific sense of humour. He will be dearly missed.
There is no service planned at this time.
