1940 – 2020
Terrence (Terry) Michael Brewer
Terry was born to Margaret (Jones) and Walter Brewer on March 6, 1940 in Vancouver, British Columbia and he left us on December 13, 2020.
Anyone who met Terry could not help but be drawn to his humour, his character, his love of life and family.
Several things fed his soul…
Being near the ocean
Telling stories of the years he worked on the CP boats, leaving home at 14 and lying about his age to work on the run to Alaska
Working at the mill in Campbell River to earn his steam engineers ticket, highlighted by the making of lifelong friendships
Playing his guitar for countless audiences in CR and around BC
And mostly, the bride he met, married and loved for 64 years – Myrna
Myrna remembers the day they met like it was yesterday – Terry came into her school in his strides, white shirt and tie and topcoat – a natty dresser at 16 years old. On that day, Myrna told her best girlfriend, ‘That’s the man I’m going to marry’.
Terry’s other loves included collecting wood along the shores of CR to hand split into cedar shakes, reading, racing cars and a lifelong passion for motorsports, and playing crib with Myrna. He and Myrna travelled – 18 cruises, trips by train and plane, and hundreds of kms driving to visit their kids and grandkids. They met people that they kept close to their hearts for ever after.
Terry and Myrna became involved in the Alzheimer’s Support Group, and Terry served as chairman, helping so many families deal with the ravages of that disease.
And Terry was adored – by his sons, his grandchildren, his many nieces and nephews, his friends and family.
His grace, humour, wisdom, his enduring love for Myrna, his guidance and leadership, spoke of the man he was.
Terry was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Joan, Pat and Gwen and his brothers Danny, Trevor and Brian.
He is survived by his beautiful bride, Myrna (Damer), his son Dean (Kim), his son Kent (Michelle) his grandchildren Kailah, Blaise, Sienna and Jazmin. Terry felt immense gratitude to be loved by a large number of nieces and nephews. Some he knew as babies, some came to him later and all were equally loved.
He also leaves his sister, Yvonne Richardson, his sister in law Helen Klassen, his brother in law Gerry Leggatt and near to his heart, Tracee, who will always be his daughter.
He did not tell you how to do the right thing. He lived doing the right thing.
(in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzeimer’s Society or to BC Cancer Foundation) We will celebrate Terry’s life in 2021 in Campbell River.
