Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on November 20, 2020, aged 84. Predeceased by her husband, Ralph; parents, Leah and William Johnson; and sister, Violet (Clarence) Crowley. Leaving to mourn with precious memories are her children, Lisa (Tom), Walter (Ruth), and Vera (John); grandsons Matthew and Ethan, step granddaughter, Hillary; brothers, Clayton Johnson, Raymond Johnson, and Rick (Karen) Johnson; sisters-in-law Emily Burry and Lillie (Tom) Lush; and brothers-in-law Wilson (Doris) Calloway and Peter (Inez) Calloway; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the compassionate doctors, nurses, and staff of the HSC Neurology 4 South B. A special thank you, also, to Dr. Natalia Pittman for her care and expertise.
Betty lived a full life. With her early years devoted to her family and occasional teaching contracts, she took over Pinedale Farms at the age of 45 when her husband, Ralph, passed away. Although new to farming, she embraced the challenge and was successful with the venture. She served on the Terra Nova Municipal Council, numerous farm committees and boards, as well as other organizations, including the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission. Betty always took great joy in hosting gatherings of friends and family, and will be remembered fondly by everyone who knew her.
A private service will take place at the Carnell Memorial Chapel, St. John’s, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 27th, and will be live streamed. Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 28th, in Terra Nova at the Holy Trinity Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to The Terra Nova Community Workers or to The Arthritis Society.
