Obituary
Myrtle Valentine McLachlan (née Nutter) passed away December 5, 2020 at the Rose Villa in Rosetown, SK at the age of 96 years.
Myrtle was born on July 28, 1924 in Floral, SK to Edward Nutter and Eva May Peterson. She attended school at Floral, SK until the family moved to a farm near Nipawin where she attended school at Pontrellus until grade nine. Her dream was to become a nurse, however, despite being an A student, times were tough. She went to work at a restaurant in Nipawin and as a hired girl for a family near there. In her early 20’s, she and a friend went down East as the war was ending where she was able to secure a job as an aid in the hospital. She wasn’t there long before returning to the prairies where she worked at Waskesui Red Deer Lodge as a cook. It was there she met Ernest McLachlan who would become her husband and they began their family, Evelyn in 1951, Jim in 1952, Alfred in 1953, Barb in 1955 and Vivian in 1959. With her large family, her love of sewing became an asset as many a snowsuit she made, many an outfit she mended and it also supplemented the family finances when she began sewing at Yaeger’s Furs. She also worked cleaning churches, hotels and assisting at a catering company. With the passing of Ernest in 1972 and two children at home to support, she went to work as a nurse’s aid at Mont St. Joseph and studied to obtain her Nurses Aid Certificate. At the age of 65 years, Myrtle retired due to an old knee injury which required a knee replacement. For 55 years, Prince Albert was her home. As her mind began to deteriorate, she moved to Lion’s Manor in Rosetown, then, the Rosetown Nursing Wing. In 2014 when the Rose Villa opened, she became one of it’s first residents where she remained until her passing.
Myrtle loved to grow flowers, bake pies, clean and have the shiniest floors, play ball and she loved to learn new things, like learning to golf and driving a lawn mower. Most of all, she believed in family and was always happy and ready to take care of her grandchildren. Her day ended every night with her on her knees praying for all of her children and grandchildren, even when her Alzheimer’s over came her. Her strength and resilience in all adversities in her life is the spirit that will carry us all.
Myrtle is survived by her daughter Evelyn (Stuart) Walker and family Corinna Walker and son Braxton Walker Balgoun, Christa Gitonga (Stanley Mawara) and family Hilary, Naomi and Joshua Gitonga, Pamela Walker (Lee Butler); son Jim (Bonnie) McLachlan and family Nicholas (Kathryn) McLachlan and Christopher McLachlan; son Alfred (Phyllis) McLachlan and family Robin (Dan) Heintz, Torry McLachlan and Emmitt; daughter Barbara (Larry) Yaremko and family Jordan Yaremko and Ashley Yaremko (Kevin Drozdowski); daughter Vivian (Peter) Cockburn and family Clinton Cockburn, Chelsey (Joshua) Côté and Maverick and Bennett; sisters-in-law Vi Nutter, Pearl McLachlan and Alma McLachlan as well as numerous nieces nephews and decendants of the Nutter and McLachlan families. She was predeceased by her parents Edward and Eva Nutter, husband Ernest McLachlan, siblings Vera Nutter, Ethel Penner, Eldon Nutter, Helen Pruden, Anderene Nutter, Lorene Morton and Edward Nutter.
