Hugh Fitzpatrick
1943-2020
Obituary of Hugh Edward Fitzpatrick
With appreciation for a life well-lived, the family of Hugh
Fitzpatrick of Saint John, cherished husband of Carol (Hébert)
Fitzpatrick sadly announce his sudden passing which occurred on
Monday, November 9, 2020 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on
January 8, 1943 in Saint John, he was the son of the late Hugh Gerard
and Margaret Dorothy (Hogan) Fitzpatrick.
Hugh was always proud of being born and raised in Saint John, however,
this was not to be outmatched by his passion for his Irish heritage.
Hugh contributed to his community in numerous ways over the years but
most notedly, he was a respected Funeral Director who served Saint
John for 47 years at his family funeral home, Fitzpatrick’s.
Hugh always took great comfort in his Catholic faith and was a regular
at Mass. He was a lover of all things Irish and looked forward to St.
Patrick’s Day each year (only 128 days to go, Hugh). He served
as Past President of the Saint John St. Patrick’s Society and
continued as a director. Hugh was also an active member of the Irish
Canadian Cultural Association and his favourite watering hole was
O’Leary’s. He was a Past Faithful Navigator (Knights of
Columbus), a former chairman of the Maritime Provinces Harness Racing
Commission, an avid horseman, Saint John City Councillor from
1989-1992, was active with the funeral directors convention of 1981, a
member of the Liberal Party and in past years he volunteered
tirelessly with the Boys & Girls Club of Saint John. Hugh enjoyed
travelling, especially to Boston and always treasured his
“boys” trip to Ireland. Most of all, Hugh adored those he
loved and his service, generosity and kindness will be forever
remembered by all who knew him.
In addition to his beloved wife, Carol, Hugh will be lovingly
remembered by his children, Hugh Gregory Fitzpatrick of Ontario and
Mary Colleen Woodhouse (Paul) of Saint John; step-children, Janice
Crilley-Mason (Dino Pasqualetto) of Saint John, Elizabeth Gorman
(Jeremiah Percival) of Whitehorse, Yukon and Harry Gorman of Saint
John; sister, Mary A. Gorman; special nieces, Margaret McGuire (Steve)
and Kathleen Gorman both of Saint John; adored grandchildren, Kaitie,
Tanner, Raven, Luna, Myles and Aengus; great-granddaughter, Jessa;
along with his large extended family who he loved dearly.
