Diana Barrie Barrie McClughan McKenzie Friday November 6th 2020

Diana Barrie (McKenzie) McClughan
Born June 2nd, 1925, Barrie passed away peacefully and courageously on November 6th, 2020, at the Pasqua Hospital with family by her side. She remained private, caring, and independent until the very end.
Predeceased by parents Alexander McKenzie (1970) and Diana (Folster) McKenzie (1986), husband William (Bill) McClughan (1986), daughter Sharon (1967), sister Edna (1913), brother John (2005), brother “Carl” (Thomas Carlyle) (2003), brother Carmon (2008), brother Ken (1994), and sister Olive (1999).
Survived by son Neil McClughan, daughter-in-law Ellen, grandson Scott, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Barrie was lovingly nicknamed by Neil as “Hubbard” many years ago. And it stuck. She was known to Scott as Grandma Hubbard and many friends and extended family also called her by her nickname. Even her brothers, much to her chagrin!
As a teen she survived tuberculosis twice and spent close to 4 years being treated in the Sanatorium at Fort San from May – October 1936 and again from March 1939 to May 1942. In November 1946, she started working in the Coop and Credit Union in Lestock, Sask until August 1954 when she moved to Nokomis.
Bill and Barrie were married in Kelliher, Sask on August 16, 1954 and resided in Nokomis where Bill was the Wheat Pool elevator agent. She lived in Nokomis for 57 years and even survived a house move when Neil was only 2 weeks old! She loved her time in Nokomis and was very involved in the community – United church, seniors’ group, meals on wheels, meals for community and sporting events, Legion, the annual Nokomis fair, etc.. She also loved gardening and spending time in her yard. Bill and Barrie travelled many places with friends and after Bill passed, Barrie was able to travel to Hawaii with Betty Kerr (Ellen’s mom), and sister-in-law Eva McKenzie as well as numerous trips with Neil and Ellen including visiting them in England when they lived there.
Nokomis was always “home”, but the upkeep of the yard and house eventually became too much. In 2011 she moved to Selo Gardens in Regina to be closer to Neil, Ellen and Scott.
Per her wishes, a graveside service for family and friends will be held sometime in the spring 2021 when it is warmer and where she will be buried beside Bill in the Nokomis cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Barrie’s memory can be made to either the Nokomis Legion (Branch #290) or to the Nokomis Senior’s Drop-In Centre.
“Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that is how I will remember you all.”
