Obituary of Hazel Holland
Holland, Hazel
1928-2020
It is with profound sadness that the Holland family announces the passing of their beloved mum, Hazel Holland (nee Pewtner) on Monday, November 2, 2020 at the age of 92 with her daughter by her side. She was predeceased by her infant son Mark and by her husband Harry (Henry Raymond Holland). She will be sorely missed. Cherished by her daughter Jackie Holland (Brian Yateman) and son Scott Holland, all of Kingston.
Fondly remembered by many friends and relatives, both in Canada and Great Britain. Born July 26, 1928 in Blackwood, Monmouthshire, South Wales, Hazel graduated from Hengoed School for Girls with honours, worked at a hat store, (where she tried on more hats than she sold!), a fishing net factory, and the 3M company in South Wales. Her great love was old time dancing at the “stute” with her mother and sister watching from the balcony. She met her other great love, Harry, at a Birmingham Dance Hall. Together they emigrated to Toronto, Canada, where she worked for the Ontario Federation of Labour. Returning to England again before finally settling back in Canada, in Amherstview, Ontario, in 1966. Here she was heavily involved with the Girl Guides, planning, and executing an exchange trip with British Girl Guides as well as being a Brown Owl and Deputy Commissioner of Canada for Girl Guides. She worked various clerical positions at Hotel Dieu, Kingston General Hospital and The Canada Amateur Radio Federation. She spent many years enjoying ballroom dancing with Harry and friends as part of the CANUK Club (Canadian and United Kingdom Dance Club). When her legs no longer allowed her to dance, her independent spirit and strength still prevailed as she chose to remain in her bungalow home until the “dance ended”. Hazel always kept a positive attitude, some would say feisty, and she knew, a nice cup of tea helps with everything! So put the kettle on. Hazel was able to remain in her home with the help of many community health services as well as their personal support workers over the years, private help and her daughter Jackie. Special thanks to those that knew mum the best and learned from her the gift of patience, love, and laughter. Thanks also to the Queen Palliative Care Team and all of those at KGH who helped get mum home, to have a small taste of her favourite meal – fish and chips, with mushy peas of course!
Cremation has been entrusted to the James Reid Funeral Home.
A celebration of life will be held in the near future and as expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made in Hazel’s name to the War Amps of Canada or a charity of your choice.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Hazel
