Obituary
Rosie Cymbaluk (nee Maliczyn) Our hearts are broken as we announce the loss of our beloved mother and Baba “Bub” Rosie Cymbaluk (Maliczyn). Rosie passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at Tudor House Personal Care Home. Her family held vigil by her bedside in the weeks leading up to her passing. She leaves to cherish her memory her son Gordon (Elsie); her granddaughters Kerissa (Mark) and Shelby; great-granddaughters Chauntea and Edyn; great-great grandsons Jacob and Carter; cousins and friends. Rosie was predeceased by her husband Michael (Mike) “Gedo” Cymbaluk; parents Olena Maliczyn (Tolub) and George Maliczyn; 13 brothers and sisters; and many cousins and friends. Rosie was born on November 22, 1919 in Silver, Manitoba after her parents’ immigration to Canada from Sloboda, Austria. She married Mike on June 19, 1938. Upon marrying, they continued the family tradition of farming in the Zbruch district of Manitoba until 1959, when the family relocated to Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba. Baba loved animals, cooking, baking, pickling, sewing, Ukrainian music, and volunteering at Gimli Hospital where she made crafts for the Rotary Club – but, her largest passion in life was her beautiful garden. In their “retirement” years, Bub and Gedo enjoyed numerous bus trips all over Canada and the United States. Some of the family’s memories of our beloved Mother/Bub include winters spent playing a card game called Hola; summers at the beach with her and Gedo; and lots of company at the house. Bub was a proud, strong-willed, hard-working, determined woman who spent her days barefoot in her beloved garden. Everyone who knew her appreciated her delicious holubtsi, pedaheh, bread, paska, pickles, borscht and bakings such as grunsky jam cookies. If you visited Rosie, you were going to be fed, and fed well! She would plant, weed and sow seeds with her bare hands and water all of her garden and flower beds from the rain barrel with an old pot. Despite the aches and pains, she would never gripe or complain. In her eighties, her family had to constantly remind her NOT to climb up on the roof to take down snow and that she no longer needed to scrape and paint her house, herself anymore. However, being the determined woman she was, she never listened – instead, she would say “I just go little by little…” Rosie will be remembered for her soft heart, sharp wit, and endearing Ukrainian phrases. Her spirit will be felt whenever the sound of Ukrainian fiddle music can be heard, the smell of freshly baked bread can be detected, and through the feeling of cool soil underfoot. Be with the angels our beautiful Baba. Due to the current health restrictions, a private service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2020 at Gilbart Funeral Home Inc. in Selkirk, Manitoba. The family extends their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff of Tudor House Personal Care Home, the staff of Arborg Hospital, as well as the staff of Arborg Assisted Living Centre. If friends so desire, contributions may be made in Rosie’s memory to Tudor House Personal Care Home, 800 Manitoba Ave, Selkirk, Manitoba; to a local animal rescue; or to a local farm sanctuary.
Baba’s (Rosie’s) Garden
If gardens grow in heaven, they’ll be thankful you’ve arrived.
Your lifetime of experience, the angels have surmised,
that it was time to call you home, there’s so much work to do.
Though your feet don’t touch the ground, those who waited, knew-
with all your love and devotion, the garden would thrive and grow-
and all the tears of loved ones, would nourish the seeds you sow.
Although our hearts are broken, we knew that it was time-
your angel wings were ready, the decision was divine.
Your memory will be cherished, our love will never cease.
We’ll find you in the sunshine, we know that you’ve found peace.
