It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Solveig Rasmussen (nee Leander Nielsen), who passed away peacefully at home with family members by her side.
Solveig, predeceased by her husband, the late Rene, will be greatly missed by daughter Betty-Anne Maynard (the late Michael) and Frank Rasmussen (Dora). On the Maynard side, she was affectionately known as Nana to her grandchildren Michael (Nikki-Rae), Mallory, and Matthew (Stephanie) and great-granddaughter Meredith and Farmor to the Rasmussen grandchildren Erik, Emma, Paul, and James.
Born in Rejstrup, Denmark, Solveig was a social butterfly who loved cooking, gardening, and hosting tea parties. She was an incredible cook and delighted in feeding a houseful of people whenever she could. Her beautiful gardens were a frequent stop by many, and through her monthly garage sales, Solveig knew almost everyone in the community. She loved to entertain and held weekly parties welcoming her friends to gather for a cup of tea, some cookies, or a glass of sherry in her garden.
At the age of 20, Solveig left Denmark and embarked on a journey to start a new life for herself. Bouncing from Norway to the United States and then Sarnia, Ontario, she finally settled in Toronto with only a suitcase of her belongings and very little knowledge of English or the country she now called home. After frequenting a Danish club, she fell in love with the man behind the piano, her late husband Rene, a fellow Dane from Copenhagen, Denmark. They were married in 1952, and in 1960 they moved to Puslinch, in the Guelph area to manage a Danish club known as Sunset Villa. After moving several times, Hastings became their hometown in 1986 so they could live closer to their daughter Betty-Anne.
Solveig was a warm and loving woman who was adored by her family and friends. She was active and full of life and will be sorely missed by those who had the incredible opportunity to meet her.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, a Celebration of Life will be held in the Hastings Community Gardens in Hastings in the late spring or early summer.
In Solveig’s memory, donations can be made to the Hastings Revitalization Association or a charity of one’s choice.
