Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Ruth Madeline McMillan of Plenty, Saskatchewan on September 29, 2020 in Rose Villa, Rosetown. Ruth was born on August 25, 1927 to Josephine and Vincent Cummings of the Glengarry District south of Ruthilda. She had three older brothers, Charlie, Earl, and John. The family moved to the farm at Stranraer as she started Grade 3. Ruth’s childhood was during the Dirty Thirties, and she was a teenager during World War II. Her first job was in the Dodsland area, and then she worked in Plenty. It was here, at a dance, that Ruth met the love of her life, Fraser McMillan. They were married on October 20, 1948. They drove to Banff for their honeymoon. They made their home on the farm seven and a quarter miles north of Plenty. Ruth and Fraser were hard-working, industrious farmers. Ruth grew a large garden, raised chickens, baked bread, separated the milk each morning, and sold the cream and eggs for extra money for the household. Ruth and Fraser had two children, Judy and John. She took wonderful care of her family and treasured every minute she spent with them and at their various activities. Ruth took pride in being a great homemaker. There are many happy memories of family gatherings, which included delicious home-cooked meals shared with extended family.
Ruth had a special place in the hearts of Fraser’s parents and a very close relationship with her own mother. Ruth missed Fraser terribly after he died on February 26, 1991. She and Fraser had made a wonderful life for themselves and their family on the farm. Next, she moved into care in Rosetown, spending time in the Nursing Wing, Wheatbelt Centennial Lodge, McNab Place, and lastly, she moved into the new Rose Villa. During her time in Rosetown, she enjoyed the different activities that were available, and her sweet and gentle nature brought her close to numerous people. This sweetness and gentleness stayed with her until the end. Ruth will be greatly missed by the many people whom she touched in her life. The lives of all who knew her were enriched by her presence. We will remember forever those beautiful blue eyes, and the beautiful heart and soul behind them.
Ruth is survived by her two children, Judy McMillan and John (Bonnie) McMillan, her five grandchildren, Kerrie (Rob) Gulutzan, Julie (Jason) Pateman, Lindsay McMillan, Carolyn Stratychuk, and Caley (Stacey) Stratychuk, and her four great-grandchildren, Colby and Ryan Gulutzan and Deklin and Emerson Stratychuk. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A family graveside funeral service will be held in the Plenty Cemetery.
