Bob has been a Lion and a member of Lions International for the past 47 years, having joined the Channel-Port aux Basques Lions Club in October 1974. In September 1982 Lion Bob transferred to the St. John’s Lions Club, where he has been a dedicated Member for the last 39 years. As a Lion, Lion Bob has held many positions including 7 years as Secretary of the Committee that was formed in 1974 to design, find a proper location, and construct to build what is today renowned as The Lions, Max Simms Memorial Camp. He also held many positions on the District and Multiple District N4. Lion Bob was the Multiple District Coordinator for LCIF. He also served as District N4 LCIF Coordinator for 6 years, achieving great financial results for District N4. On the Club level, Lion Bob has held just about every Executive position (some more than once) and was also Zone 8 Chairperson.
Lion Bob won any awards and accolades for his work as a Lion. These include Life Membership in Lions International; the Melvin Jones Fellowship; The Judge Brian Stevenson Award; Life membership in the Lions Foundation of Canada and the 30 Year Distinguished Service Award. All the time Bob was a Lion, his purpose was to live up to the Lions Motto: “WE SERVE”. Bob aspired to serve others and would like to be remembered as a Great Lion and a Great Teacher. To each of these aspirations, he achieved this, as noted in the acknowledgement of his dedication as a volunteer with Lionism and also as exemplified below in elements of his teaching career.
Bob was a superb and dedicated teacher for nearly 30 years, with 25 of these years as a Social Studies Teacher at his beloved Bishops College. During his tenure there, Bob was the Teacher Advisor for the Bishops Provincial Award-Winning Cheerleaders as well as Teacher Advisor to the Student Council. Bob took his Student Council across the country to 10 Canadian Student Leadership Conferences (CSLC), and for the older students, let’s not forget Slave Days! Working at Bishops College was like working in a community where everyone enjoyed the companionship of their fellow Teachers.
Bob loved every minute of his career at Bishops College. This, because of the high-quality administration, office staff, janitorial and especially for compassionate and caring students. Bob’s greatest enjoyment was his interaction with the best staff possible to work with.
Bob would often be contacted by students following their high school years with stories of how his taking a specific interest in them, led them along a path to success. Many kept him informed of life events, and also to check in with him to see how he was doing. One could not go anywhere in St. John’s without a former student making time to call out “Mr. Beauchamp!” and then he would always have time to listen to their stories, and to catch up where they left off.
Bob was a dedicated and selfless school fundraising volunteer and an excellent teacher. He worked to be on the level with all of his students. He engendered respect from many and was always there to lend a helping hand to the school, other teachers and to students needing someone to listen and sometimes to steer them on the straight and narrow.
Bob loved helping others, and during his long health battle was reluctant to complain and was always concerned about others and how they were doing despite his own challenges. Bob was an honest, upstanding and fine gentleman. He is so thankful to Sharon for her support, concern and caregiving to him for these past number of years during his illness. Her love, companionship and tolerance have made these last years, months and days so much more than life would be without his ‘Lovedove’.
Bob and his family offer heartfelt thanks to Dr. Paul Johnson, Dr. Michael Hogan, Dr. Glen Fallows, Dr. Stewart Rorke and Dr. Julia Trahey. Also, the family offers much gratitude for the professional, compassionate and caring ‘symptom management team’ led by Dr. Cheryl Hurley. Special thanks to the kind support from the home care team of Eastern Health & Community Services Michelle Loder and Paulette Doyle. The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Center provided help and support throughout Bob’s long battle and we are so thankful for all of the Doctors, Nurses and volunteers who provided this highest level of care.
Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue with visitations on Thursday, September 24, 2020 from 2pm-5pm & 7pm-9pm. Funeral service to be held from Barrett’s Memorial Chapel on Friday, September 25th at 1:30pm. Inurnment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Rd.
