Anne Patricia MacDonald (nee Barry) passed away on September 13th, 2020. She is survived by her loving husband, John “Jack” H. MacDonald; three children, John Paul MacDonald (Marilyn), Mary MacDonald (David McGreer), and Carmel Scott (Ken); eight grandchildren: Katie McGreer (Salvatore Cucchiara), Maura McGreer, Elizabeth Scott, Matthew McGreer, Mary Scott, Alexandra MacDonald, Margaret Scott, and John Isaac MacDonald; siblings, Carmel O’Doherty, Marie Power, Cyril Barry, and many nieces and nephews. Anne is predeceased by her son, Andrew MacDonald; her brothers Edward and Patrick Barry; and by her sister Doreen Ross.
Anne was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1934 to the late Charles and Alexa (McManus) Barry. She met her husband Jack in Sydney, Nova Scotia more than 65 years ago. Together they raised their family while living in Cape Breton, Pictou County, and the Valley, before finally settling in New Glasgow. Although Anne and her husband recently moved to Alberta to be closer to family, Nova Scotia remains her home.
Anne cherished her family, friends, and faith. She worked hard to make her home and garden bright and inviting. She loved reading, talking politics, eating ice cream, and the ocean. Anne will be remembered for her singing and her gifted piano and organ playing, which she shared with her family, friends, church, and community. We will all miss being cajoled into singing along as she played her favourite show tunes and folk songs, we will miss chatting with her over the phone or over dinner, we will miss her welcoming us home with a warm hug, and we will hold her close in our hearts forever.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a funeral mass will be held for family at Mary Help of Christians Parish in Edmonton on Monday, September 21st. A commemorative celebration will be held in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia when the situation permits. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
