Michael’s Obituary
POTHIER, Michael Alvin – died peacefully at the Little Dolphin Seniors’ Home in Mavilette, Nova Scotia, on Thursday, September 17, 2020. His parents, George and Doris (Pothier), welcomed Mike to the world on October 5, 1936. They raised him along with his 11 siblings in Wedgeport, Nova Scotia. His brothers called him Half Pint because he was shorter than the rest of them. Mike was pleased to meet a long-lost 12th sibling later in life. Mike became a lobster fisherman early in his life, to help support his family, and continued through to his retirement in 2004. Many of those years were spent on a crew with his brother and best friend Donald. He was known as Handy Mike around the wharf because he was always willing and able to do whatever was needed and whatever was asked of him. He worked hard year-round to support his family. Irish mossing in the summer and apple picking, in Massachusetts and in the Annapolis Valley, in the fall. Mike married his bride Ann (Doucette) June 23, 1962 and made a home in Wedgeport for their three beautiful girls, Leona (Mark Pineo), Yvonne (Pastor Barry Wood) and Melissa Fevens. For more than 30 years, they spent summers at Belle Baie Park in Church Point where they made some of their dearest friends and most cherished memories. They also travelled as often as they could to warm, tropical climates, their favourite being Cuba which they visited numerous times. Mike received countless hours of pleasure tending to his garden and he loved to cook from his private collection of recipes. Those who knew him best got to sample his baking and his whipped cake frosting. He was a devoted member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church and a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. But his favourite title was that of Grand-père Mike to Schyler and Benjamin (Kristen) Fevens, Christina (David) and Caitlin Wood, Keith and Scott Pineo. Mike is survived by siblings Francis Cathro, Dorothy Poulin, George Junior Pothier, and Diane Pertulla all of Ottawa, Yvonne Johnson, of Connecticut, and Thomas Pothier of Wedgeport. He is predeceased by his parents and by sisters Helen Kolterman and Caroline Wambera, twin brothers Donald and Daniel Pothier, Gerald Pothier in infancy and Malcolm Porter. The family would like to thank the amazing and devoted staff at the Little Dolphin, especially Helen, Carol and Shelley. A small, private ceremony took place for immediate family only. All will be invited to a celebration of Handy Mike’s life sometime in 2021. Donations to Parkinson Canada, or the St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery Fund.
