August 13, 1938 – September 8, 2020
Born in Losser, Overijssel, The Netherlands, Herman witnessed the ravages of World War II through the eyes of a child. His family escaped the “mouth of the shark” that still circled their beloved homeland to face the unwelcome and disillusionment of emigration. These events shaped him into a man who thirsted for justice and hungered for peace. Through his discernment of the priesthood and dedication to lifelong learning and education, Herman earned a degree in Philosophy from St. Augustine’s Seminary, and an Honors degree in Psychology from Richmond College. Herman served a distinguished career in childcare and protection, and youth corrections services for decades, helping disadvantaged children and youth achieve better lives. He led the Bible study at St. Francis De Sales Parish in Ajax for several years, and later at St. Joseph’s Parish in Beaverton, where he inspired and uplifted many. In his later years, Herman opened a family business in a “European old-world style,” enjoying the freedom and satisfaction it offered.
Above all, Herman was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with family, sharing stories and breaking bread together. He was unfailingly kind and fiercely loyal, and his home was always open to those in need.
“My darling wife Louise and family take care of one another and find solace and strength in my life, and hope and faith from my death. For as God promised to be with us until the end of time, so too, will I live on in your hearts. Know that from God’s great Kingdom, I will enjoy sharing your laughter and triumphs, and hold you through your sorrows, for we will be together always.”
Let Us Pray
Heavenly Father, through your Son, Jesus, You commanded us to love one another and promised possession of Your Kingdom to those who would feed, give to drink, clothe, visit in prison and take in the stranger. Behold, Heavenly Father, our dear husband, father, and grandfather who throughout his life fulfilled your commandments. Grant unto him the promise of Your Kingdom. We ask this through Jesus, Your Son, our Lord. Amen.
