Sterling Burton Johnston
1932-2020
Sterling, husband of Joan (Craik) Johnston, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, on Saturday, September 5, 2020. Born on May 2, 1932 in Wayerton, NB, he was the son of the late Tom and Theresa (Baisley) Johnston.
Sterling graduated high school in 1950 and went to work for Frasers Pulp Mill trucking and later went on to camp clerk for the company. In 1955 he went to work for Brown’s Service Station with his brother Donnie in the Service Department. During his time with Brown’s he also owned a Pulp truck and employed men to operate it selling the wood to the mills.
When Brown’s closed he and his brother, Donnie worked with Marhawk Equipment in the service department, but because of his deep love of the woods he returned as a Silviculture Foreman and stayed until his retirement. In retirement he continued to enjoy the woods, spending many hours on his woodlot in Trout Brook, cutting firewood and lumber for the nearby mills.
Sterling was an avid reader and at one time kept a daily journal. In his earlier years he enjoyed bowling, curling and coaching minor hockey, but his greatest passion was his attention to detail to his vegetable garden. He enjoyed offering the fruits of his labor to many. Sterling loved his faithful companion Ben, a black lab whom he could be seen walking daily.
