Christopher Andrew Charles
29th June 1946 – 9th August, 2020
It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Christopher Andrew Charles, at home in Richmond, British Columbia, on August 9, 2020. He was the longtime companion of Shelley Mills of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Chris was born in England to Fred Ashman and Colleen Brown Ashman on June 29, 1946. He grew up in Ottawa, Ontario as the beloved son of Colleen Brown Charles and D’Arcy Charles and brother to Jennifer Elizabeth Charles of Oxford Mills, Ontario and Peter Meredith Charles of Lakewood, California.
Chris was an uncle to Emily Charles-Donelson, Andrew Macfarlane, and Harley Charles and great-uncle to Scarlett Charles-Rennie, Charles Macfarlane and Henry Macfarlane. Also brother to Christina Noble and Anita Barrowcliffe, and uncle to Libby (Olivia) Young and her sons Samuel Alan Young and Max William Ashman Young, all of England.
Chris got his fixed-wing pilots license in his early twenties and went on to become a helicopter engineer and earned his helicopter pilot license soon after. He spent the happiest years of his career flying in West Africa with Viking Helicopters for the World Health Organization’s Onchocerciasis Control Program.
When Chris was grounded due to health issues in the 1990s, he moved to Vancouver and drove for 15 years with Coast Mountain Bus Company before retiring in 2015.
There will be no service held at this time due to COVID-19. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation in Chris’ name would be appreciated. Cremation by Kearney Funeral Services, Vancouver, British Columbia.
