Lillian Schelew
Lillian Schelew passed away on
Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at the age of 98. She will be remembered
fondly by her 4 sons, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a
large number of friends – some of whom are 20 years younger
than her.
Throughout her life, she had
boundless energy which she used to pursue her numerous and varied
interests.
Lillian had a quick wit and a
sharp mind. She initially attended Queen’s University and
received her BA from Mount Allison University in 1942. She was past
President of the Sisterhood of Tiferes Israel Synagogue, the Moncton
branch of Canadian Hadassah, the Moncton branch of the Canadian Club,
Moncton University Women’s Club and the New Brunswick branch
of the Canadian Federation of University
Women.
She was a past Board Member of
the United Way of Moncton, the Moncton YWCA and YMCA, Greater Moncton
Foundation Inc., the Moncton Museum, the Moncton Drama Council, the
Moncton branch of the Atlantic Symphony, the Moncton branch of
Women’s World, Friends of the Moncton Hospital, the Moncton
Symphony Foundation, Theatre New Brunswick, Moncton 100 and the Board
of Governors of the Beaverbrook Auditorium. She was a continuous
contributor to the Moncton Food Bank as well as numerous other
charities.
Somehow finding the time,
Lillian was an avid golfer, tennis player, swimmer and bridge player.
She took classes at University of Moncton to improve her spoken
French. Besides taking a course on Investing for Women, she even
mentored other women in this regard.
She was an avid art collector
and specifically sought out and supported up and coming New Brunswick
artists. Years ago, she donated all of her art collection to Mount
Allison University. She took a pottery class and produced some work of
her own that wasn’t half bad.
Lillian was also an avid
traveler. I don’t think there is a continent that she
hasn’t visited and has been to dozens of countries all over
the world. The bulk of her travelling was done in the 40’s,
50’s and 60’s when travel was a lot more difficult
than it is today.
In essence, Mom was
one-of-a-kind going concern. She was a character. She only slowed down
and began to show her age at around age 90. She will be missed but
thankfully, it is evident that some of her genes have been passed on
throughout the generations.
Special thanks go out to
Brenda Leaman and the entire staff at Monarch Hall at Parkland in
Riverview who devotedly looked after Mom in her later
years.
A service is scheduled for
Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Tiferes Israel Synagogue. Due
to Covid 19, the gathering will be limited to 50 people, contact
tracing, masks, hand sanitizing and social distancing will be used. A
Commemoration of Lillian’s Life will be held in Shediac
later this fall after indoor Covid restrictions are
eased.
