Obituary of Rosalie Therese Matthews
Matthews, Rosalie “Rose” Therese (nee McGuire), passed away peacefully at Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, Thursday, July 30, 2020, in her 89th year. Born March 25, 1932 in Sydenham, Ontario, daughter of the late Leo and Mary (nee Duggan) McGuire. Predeceased by husbands, Harold Matthews and Donald Collie; and newborn Lynn Collie.
Survived and deeply loved by her children, Nick Collie (Charlotte), Simcoe, ON; Dawn Anderson, Niagara Falls, ON; and Brett Collie (Melissa), Phinney Cove, NS; grandchildren, Matthew Collie; Jonathan Collie (Joanne); Jared Collie; Lindsay (Niels) Engel; Beverley Lamb (Shane); James Lamb; David Collie (Michelle); and William Collie; stepchildren, Linda (David) Hart, Fort Erie, ON; Brian Matthews Sr. (Barb), Waldec, NS; and the late David Matthews (Charlotte), Fort Erie, ON; step-grandchildren, Theresa Donovan (David); Alan (Lisa) Mitchell; William (Cecily) Mitchell; Brian Jr., Kevin, Maggie, and Pamela Matthews. Beloved sister of Maureen (Helmuth) Rudolph; brother-in-law, Robert Collie; sister-in-law, Hazel Hockley. Also survived by numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Edward, Joseph and Francis McGuire; sisters-in-law, Geraldine and Anne McGuire; brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, Harold and Isabelle Collie; Joyce and Robert Finn; Anita Collie; Gordon and June Matthews; Jean and Jim Compeau; Marie and Reese Drehmer; Howard Matthews. Rosalie will also be dearly missed by lifelong friend, Rita Boutin, Fort Erie, ON.
Rose was a member of St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church, CWL, and Fraternal Order of Eagles, Fort Erie, holding executive positions in both organizations over the years. She was always willing to volunteer in community events and fundraisers, especially those involving Douglas Memorial Hospital and St. Michael’s Parish. Rose worked for many years at Prince Rubber and Plastics, Buffalo, NY as office administrator, retiring in 1977. She was a voracious reader who enjoyed dancing, knitting, camping and baking with her grandchildren. But most of all, she loved family and cherished visits with them.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Mountain Lea Lodge for taking excellent care of Mom in her time there.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario; Ronald McDonalds Children’s Charities or the Alzheimer’s Society.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown and once the travel restrictions ease, a celebration of life will be held in Fort Erie, ON.
