Obituary of Ronald Wilfred Steele
Ron was born to Merrion and Mabel Steele on July 24, 1943, in Provost, Alberta. He was the second child in a family of six children . . . Judie, Ron, Shirlee, Margaret Rose (deceased), Vera and Don. Ron attended Cadogan Elementary School and then graduated from Provost High School in 1961. In the fall of that same year after the death of Ron’s father, the family moved to Three Hills Alberta. Ron attended Prairie Bible College for four years. During that time Ron spent a summer break working at an orphanage in Recife, Brazil. A highlight of that time was a trip down the Amazon River. After graduating from Prairie, Ron attended Moody Bible College in Chicago, Illinois and took a one year aviation program. The next year Ron enrolled at LeTourneau in Texas, in their Mechanics program as well their Rodeo School. He chose an interesting way of travel as he hopped freight trains from Chicago to Texas. Fortunately his mother was never aware of his mode of travel!
After his time in Texas, Ron worked for two years on a horse ranch in Fresno, California and then in Boise, Idaho. Ron returned to Three Hills where he worked for a cement company. Eventually Ron started his own trucking company, Elk Run, which he operated for over 30 years. A real passion for Ron was spending time in the mountains west of Sundre. He spent many happy hours riding horse, hunting and snowmobiling. He had numerous snowmobiles, so often had friends or family with him. His nephews have many good memories of skidoo or horseback trips with their Uncle Ron.
Although Ron never married, he had a close and dear friend, Elayne Laine. Sadly she passed away from cancer in 2016. In 2012, Ron suffered a massive brain stem bleed which increasingly took away his independence over the next eight years. Ron spent the past two years in the Horizon Unit at the Centennial Centre in Ponoka. We, his family, are so grateful for the excellent, compassionate care he received there. In the early hours of August 1, 2020, Ron entered his final home, Heaven. He leaves to celebrate his life and mourn his passing: Judie Steele, Shirlee Steele, Vera and Doug Hazelton and their family, Michael and Alana, Reid and Lauren Hazelton; and Natalie and Chris, Zack, Matthias, Caleb and Anna Grohmueller, and Zach Hazelton; Don and Donna Steele and their family Leigh and Emily, Soren Steele and Scott and Dani, Addie and Holly Steele.
