Obituary
BRANDSON, Thorkell “Kelly”
Kelly passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at Royal University Hospital with his wife Sharon Wiseman by his side. Kelly was born in 1936 in Winnipeg to Thorkell and Sarah Brandson. He grew up in a tightly knit extended Icelandic family and community. He was proud of his Icelandic roots. A trip to Iceland was a memorable experience. He loved his summers spent at Gimli. After several years working in construction in his dad’s company and earning his journeyman’s papers, Kelly went to the University of Winnipeg Adult Education program to complete high school. He then went to the University of Manitoba and earned degrees in Biology and Chemistry. Kelly taught at SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) in the Chemistry department. He then moved to Saskatoon to start the Biological Sciences Technology program at SIAST (now Saskatchewan Polytechnic) where he taught for 30 years. He had many interests and skills; he was an accomplished skier – both alpine and cross-country. He introduced many students at SIAST to skiing and was one of the founders of the Saskatoon Nordic Club. He loved sailing and had fond memories and adventures sailing at Emma Lake, Diefenbaker and Lake Winnipeg. He and Sharon RV’d, camped, hiked and backpacked in the mountains, Vancouver Island and Southern USA, often in the company of friends. In retirement he became involved in birding and astronomy and liked to spend time in the winter in Arizona and New Mexico to take advantage of dark skies. Kelly brewed excellent beers, was well read, a whiz at solving crossword puzzles, travelled extensively with friends and family and often had a dog by his side. He will be remembered with love by his wife Sharon Wiseman, sister Elsie Robson, niece Janice Robson, nephews Grant Robson, Graham Robson, Paul Robson, Thorkell Brandson, Stephen Brandson, Daniel Brandson, Carl Brandson, and their families, and brother-in-law Terry (Mary) Wiseman. Kelly was predeceased by his parents Thorkell and Sarah, brother Magnus, sister-in-law Joan, brother-in-law Robert Robson, and in-laws Ralph and Margery Wiseman. At Kelly’s request there will be no funeral. For those so wishing, donations may be made to the Nature Conservatory of Canada or to the Doctor’s Without Borders, or raise a glass of Craft Beer in his memory.
