Obituary
Georgenna Blanche Elizabeth Underwood grew up in Eastend, Saskatchewan. She recounted many happy times swimming in the swimming hole and skating on the river. Her father was the schoolteacher and Georgenna was a good student. After completing normal school, she taught for one year and then entered nursing school at Regina General Hospital. After graduation Georgenna began her nursing career in Vancouver. There she met Doug, was courted, and fell in love. They had a beautiful wedding in Vancouver and then moved to Calgary where they had five sons born in a span of six years: Richard Douglas, Robert Scott, Shawn Russell, Thomas Gordon and Douglas Dee. Georgenna had a long nursing career working in Calgary at the Calgary General Hospital, Baker San, and Renfrew AADAC, retiring in 1987.
She was a character and had a certain spark that kept every conversation interesting. Tommy Douglas was a hero of hers. Being a lifelong NDP supporter, she was happy to see an NDP premier of Alberta in her lifetime. Georgenna’s hobbies were reading newspapers, keeping up on the news and writing many letters to elected officials on how to improve the world. It was important to her that people knew what she thought. She loved to plan Friday night dinners and we enjoyed many happy evenings at the Glenmore Inn and Grey Eagle. Here she tried to keep us educated on the state of the world. Dementia is a terrible disease and Georgenna suffered a relentless decline. She would have had much to say on what is going on now.
We would like to extend our appreciation to all her caregivers at Foothills Hospital, Rocky Ridge Retirement Home and Scenic Acres Retirement Home. Georgenna was predeceased by her husband Doug, and sisters Una and Audrey. She is missed by Richard (Laurie) and Arlen; Bob (Sherrie) and Heather(Jon) and Lindsay(Travis) and great granddaughters Lily, Bria, and Hailey; Shawn (Joyce); Tom (Cindy) and Jocelyn; Dee (Karen), Sarah, and Brenda (Dylan). She is also missed by her surviving sister Shirley, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please take time to write a letter to an elected official of your choice on how to improve the world.
