It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hans Brand of St. Albert, Alberta on July 9, 2020.
Hans is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Marlies; his daughter, Barbara (David) Tucker; his son, Mark (Barb) Brand; and grandchildren, Evan, Andrew, Brianne, Jessie and Ryan. He is also survived by his two brothers, Erhardt (Erika) and Volker Brand, as well as many nieces and nephews in Germany.
Hans had an adventurous spirit and journeyed to Canada from Germany in the early fifties as a young man to seek new and exciting experiences. He absolutely loved Canada. A few years later, Hans returned to Germany to marry the love of his life, and together they made Canada their permanent home.
Although he was trained in agriculture, Hans eventually became a journeyman bricklayer, then a partner in a large masonry construction firm, and ultimately owned his own masonry company. His last job – and likely one of his most noteworthy – took him and Marlies to Rhodes, Greece where he built a house for his long-time colleague and best friend, Dr. Mike Hatzinikolas. Those were three very memorable and wonderful years.
Hans was a keen sailor and he and Marlies enjoyed many years sailing on Lake Wabamun as members of the SBYC sailing community. He was an avid reader, always interested in a wide variety of topics which made for many lively conversations over the years. He had an amazing memory and we all loved listening to the stories he told about his early years. Later in life, Hans also took up woodworking as a hobby and created beautiful pieces of furniture and other items for his children, grandchildren, and friends.
Hans was known and admired by his family and many friends for his integrity, intelligence, generosity, compassion, enthusiasm, and incredibly strong work ethic. He will be missed beyond measure by all who knew and loved him.
The world with not be the same without him.
Private cremation has taken place. Due to the current situation with COVID-19, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
