With great sadness and heavy hearts, the family of the late George Edward Carter announces his sudden passing on July 7th, 2020, at the age of 73 years. George was predeceased by his parents, George and Dorothy Carter, brother Eric, grandmother Emma, mother and father-in-law, Cedella and Kenneth Bennett, and sister-in-law Florence Kettle.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Dinah, of 52 years, his two loving daughters Wendy (Wayne) of Innisfil, ON, and Amy (Henry) of Guelph, ON, and his precious grandchildren, Tyler and Rachel. He also leaves to mourn his two brothers, John Carter (Elvena) of Jeffrey’s, NL, and Danny Carter (Tina) of Port aux Basques; four sisters, Mary Carroll (Alvin) of Doyles, NL, Joan Morris (Calvin) of Port aux Basques, Sharon Sheaves (Wayne) of Fort McMurray, AB, and Diane Osmond (Jeff) of Powell River, BC; sister-in-law Ann Givlin (Rick) of Kitchener, ON, and brother-in-law Nelson Kettle of Port aux Basques. He also leaves to mourn a large circle of beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends, including his close friends and neighbours, Walt and Fay, Michelle and Vern, Betty and Sid, Cassie and Russell, and Calvin Payne.
George retired from Marine Atlantic in 1998 after 32 years of service. He served as a volunteer fireman for 22 years, and was a faithful member of St. James Anglican Church Men’s choir for many years. George enjoyed wood crafting, loved to cook, entertain his family and friends, play the ugly stick, and back in his day, he could really dance up a jig. He was known to tell a few jokes and recite a few tales, and he also enjoyed screeching in mainlanders who joined the family. George was a loving and caring soul who enjoyed life. He loved his life on the water, and he loved to see the children enjoy their time on “George’s Wharf”. George would give you the shirt off his back, and he loved every one of his family members dearly. He especially looked forward to his annual trips to Ontario to visit with his daughters and grandchildren, and tremendously enjoyed when they came home to Newfoundland. George will be greatly missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 9th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at East Haven Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at St. James Anglican Church, Channel-Port aux Basques on Friday, July 10th, 2 pm officiated by Rev. Jane Allen. Interment to follow at St. James Anglican Cemetery, Barachois Hill. Flowers are graciously accepted or donations in George’s memory can be made to the St. James Anglican Church.
