Obituary
Gertrude was born on June 3, 1961 to Irene (Lewis) and Harry Skeenum. Being the eldest of 10 children, Gertrude took the role of mother to her siblings when Mosom and Kokom had to leave for work. Gertrude met her life long partner, Melvin, in 1980. He was a singer (Red Bull Singers) and she was a dancer. Together they raised 7 children. Mom & Dad married on June 3, 2003. Together they were blessed with forty years of love, commitment and happiness. Mom loved to travel, she attended cultural ceremonies throughout the year. Her favorite was to pack up her family in the summer months just so she can camp outdoors and cook over the open fire. Mom loved to joke around, she had the craziest sense of humour. When mom was called upon she was always available to lend a helping hand. She catered many meals for various events. Mom was also “our community taxi”, as dad fondly called her. She was always available to drive for whomever needed a ride. It would not matter if the roads had a foot of snow during the winter months, she would still plow her way through, especially going to watch her grandchildren participate in many sporting events, near and far; whether it was volleyball, basketball, baseball, badminton, but hockey was her favorite. She was their #1 and loudest fan. No matter the weather, it didn’t stop her from hitting the open road. Also she was a foster parent to many, she opened her heart and home.
